Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. 1st Edition. xiv, 321, [1] pages. Illustrations. Tables. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. The Area Handbook for Czechoslovakia (1972), designated DA Pam 550-158, provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the island nation's social, political, economic, and military structures during a period of post-independence tension. Prepared by Foreign Area Studies of The American University, the volume details the ethnic and religious divisions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots alongside the island's geopolitical importance in the Eastern Mediterranean. This volume is one of a series of handbooks prepared by Foreign Area Studies (FAS) of the American University, designed to be useful to military and other personnel who need a convenient compilation of basic facts about the social, economic, political and military institutions and practices of various countries. The emphasis is on objectives descriptions on the nation's present society emphasis is on objective description of the nation's then present society and the kinds of possible or probable changes that might be expected in the future. The handbooks seek to present as full and as balanced an integrated exposition as limitations on space and research time permit. From the title page: "Research and writing were completed September 1971." The Area Handbook for Czechoslovakia (1972) offers a deeply researched diagnostic analysis of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic during a critical juncture of Cold War consolidation. Published by the U.S. Government Printing Office, the text focuses heavily on the institutional realignment that followed the crushed 1968 liberalization movements. It breaks down the societal structures of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, details the command economy under Soviet-aligned planning, and evaluates the operational status of the Czechoslovak People's Army within the Warsaw Pact framework. Czechoslovakia was a country in Central Europe. The country was bordered by Austria and Hungary to the south, Germany[c] to the west and northwest, Poland to the northeast, and Ukraine[d] to the southeast. Czechoslovakia had a hilly and mostly mountainous landscape that covered an area of 49,385 sq. miles with a mostly temperate continental and oceanic climate. The capital and largest city was Prague; other major cities and urban areas include Brno, Ostrava, Plze , Liberec, Bratislava and Ko?ice. Championed by nationalists and first presidents Tomá? Masaryk and Edvard Bene?, Czechoslovakia declared independence in 1918 amid the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and had its sovereignty affirmed in the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Following the Munich Agreement in 1938, the Sudetenland was annexed by Nazi Germany while the Second Czechoslovak Republic was formed as a client state. In 1939, the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was proclaimed while the Slovak Republic was administered separately and Carpathian Ruthenia was annexed by Hungary. Although the state thus ceased to exist, following the outbreak of World War II, Bene? formed a government-in-exile that was recognized by the Allies. Following liberation by the Red Army in 1944 and 1945, Czechoslovakia was re-established under its pre-1938 borders, with the exception of Carpathian Ruthenia, which became part of the Ukrainian SSR (a republic of the Soviet Union). The Communist Party seized power in a coup in 1948 and afterward, Czechoslovakia was part of the Eastern Bloc with a planned economy. Its economic status was formalized in membership of Comecon from 1949 and its defense status in the Warsaw Pact of 1955. A period of political liberalization in 1968, the Prague Spring, ended when the Soviet Union, assisted by other Warsaw Pact countries, invaded Czechoslovakia. In 1989, as Marxist-Leninist governments and communism were ending all over Central and Eastern Europe, Czechoslovaks peacefully deposed their communist government during the Velvet Revolution, which began on 17 November 1989 and ended 11 days later on 28 Novembe.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. 1st Edition. xiv, [2],653, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. Research completed September 1970." The Area Handbook for Yugoslavia (1973) delivers a comprehensive diagnostic survey of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, tracking its unique position as a communist state independent of the Soviet bloc. It details the country's internal balance, examining the distinct social and cultural dynamics of its constituent republics-including Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Montenegro. It pays analytical attention to Yugoslavia's innovative "socialist self-management" economic system, its policy of international non-alignment, and the structure of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), which was doctrinally tailored for Total National Defense. DA Pam 550-99, provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the island nation's social, political, economic, and military structures during a period of post-independence tension. This volume is one of a series of handbooks prepared by Foreign Area Studies (FAS) of the American University, designed to be useful to military and other personnel who need a convenient compilation of basic facts about the social, economic, political and military institutions and practices of various countries. The emphasis is on objective descriptions on the present society emphasis is on objective description of the nation then present society and possible or probable changes that might be expected in the future. The handbooks seek to present as full and as balanced an integrated exposition as limitations on space and research time permit. Yugoslavia was a country in Central Europe and the Balkans[6] that existed from 1918 to 1992. It came into existence following World War I, under the name of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, from the merger of the Kingdom of Serbia with the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, and constituted the first union of South Slavic peoples as a sovereign state, following centuries of foreign rule over the region under the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg monarchy. Under the rule of the House of Kara or evi , the kingdom gained international recognition on 13 July 1922 at the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris and was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929. Peter I was the country's first sovereign. Upon his father's death in 1921, Alexander I went on to rule the country through an extended period of political crisis that culminated in the 6 January Dictatorship and, ultimately, his assassination in 1934. Prince Paul headed the state as a prince regent until Alexander's son Peter II was declared of-age, which happened following the Yugoslav coup d'état in March 1941. Alexander I was the longest reigning of the three Yugoslav monarchs. The kingdom was invaded and occupied by the Axis powers in April 1941, marking the start of World War II in Yugoslavia. The Communist-led Partisan resistance went on to proclaim the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia and acquire the backing of the Allies at the Tehran Conference in late November 1943. In 1944, King Peter II, then living in exile, gave his recognition to the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia as the legitimate government. In November 1945, after the war ended, the regency council appointed by the King called a parliamentary election that established the Constituent Assembly of Yugoslavia. The Constituent Assembly proclaimed Yugoslavia a federal republic on 29 November 1945, thus abolishing monarchical rule. This marked the onset of a four-decade long uncontested communist party rule of the country. The newly proclaimed Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia acquired the territories of Istria, Rijeka, and Zadar from Italy. Partisan leader Josip Broz Tito ruled the country from 1944 until his death in 1980, first as the prime minister and later as the president. In 1963, the country was renamed for the final time, as the Socialist Federal Rep.…
