It breaks down the societal structures of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, details the command economy under Soviet-aligned planning, and evaluates the operational status of the Czechoslovak People's Army within the Warsaw Pact framework. Czechoslovakia was a country in Central Europe. The country was bordered by Austria and Hungary to the south, Germany[c] to the west and northwest, Poland to the northeast, and Ukraine[d] to the southeast. Czechoslovakia had a hilly and mostly mountainous landscape that covered an area of 49,385 sq. miles with a mostly temperate continental and oceanic climate. The capital and largest city was Prague; other major cities and urban areas include Brno, Ostrava, Plze , Liberec, Bratislava and Ko?ice. Championed by nationalists and first presidents Tomá? A period of political liberalization in 1968, the Prague Spring, ended when the Soviet Union, assisted by other Warsaw Pact countries, invaded Czechoslovakia. Hardcover, two volumes each bound in dark blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine with the words "President's Copy" on the spine of each volume. The cloth covers are very lightly stained. The pagination of each individual issue varies from 40 pages to 158 pages. Volume 19 is illustrated with headpieces and a few maps & portraits. The statement "Mahan Library Naval War college / Newport, Rhode Island" is stamped on the front covers of several of the issues. The volumes have a very slight musty odor and there is some minor foxing to the top edges of the books. Very good. First editions, denoted the "President's Copy" in gilt on the spine. The periodical was published monthly over a period of 10 months, from September to June.John T. "Chick" Hayward (1908-1999). Vice Admiral, United States Navy. A batboy for the New York Yankees baseball team, he started his military career on rocky footing, joining the navy at 15 years old by lying about his age. This after having been expelled from military school for disciplinary reasons. Yet he went on to be promoted to vice admiral in 1959. A navy pilot during World War II, he fought in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea campaigns, his squadron being responsible for numerous kills. He achieved the most flight hours ever attained by a flag officer (13,200 hours). He joined the Manhattan Project in 1944, helping develop the implosion components of the plutonium bomb, and after the war went to Japan to study the after effects on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He was in charge of the first attempt to photograph a nuclear explosion on the Bikini atoll in 1946. He went on to command the first nuclear-powered task force in history, leading the aircraft carrier Enterprise. He served as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode island from 1966 to 1968, and after retiring from the military worked for General Dynamics as vice president for international programs. "The tripartite catalogue Sonskeek [sp] ''72 arose from the notes and photos we made of a project that we executed during the period November ''71 - June ''72. What was the starting point of the project? Of all the Sonsbeek exhibitions in ''49- ''52- ''55- ''59 and ''66 one could or one can find back all the sculptures; although not in the original place, in the park, they are to be seen somewhere. Yet the transiency of the projects and objects as exposed during the manifestation ''Sonsbeek buiten de perken'' for us was a reason to trace back what happened to these projects and objects. Doing this we considered ourselves as visitors who came after the closing of the manifestation. We visited the original place of the object/project, made photographs and described it and did so with the present place as well. E.g. from the gigantic wedge by Ronald Bladen at the place in park Sonsbeek hardly anything could be found, except a slight difference in colour of the pavement. The wedge itself we discovered in pieces against the wall of a shed of a firm in Arnhem. Most of the projects and objects we also found back in totally different state: at rubbish dumps, on heaps of scrap- iron, dismantled and packed in boxes, in peoples homes on the cupboard. In some cases nothing was to be found back. We sent a stencil to the 35 filmmakers asking them to send a photo and a description of the present place of their films. Description and photo were their part in our project, the original place always being the place at the lawn where in a tent the films have been shown, during the manifestation. From some filmers we didn?t get an answer within a certain period, then the second card is dropped out. Some artists played a part by the publication they got in one of both Sonsbeek cataloques. When their project had a relation with a location, we visited it and made a photo, if not, we reproduced the concerning pages out of the cataloques.
