Facing bankruptcy in 1938, the company was taken over by the U.S. Maritime Commission and reorganized as American President Lines (APL). The line was famous for its fleet of "President" liners and for its iconic logo, a white dollar sign on a red funnel. Date determined from the dress of the passengers and from the notation "1-34" at the bottom inside of the rear wrapper. A "must have" for collectors of Dollar Steamship Lines.
