Dugdale's Monasticon was first published in Latin in three volumes in 1655, 1661, and 1673. This English translation and abridgement was the work of Captain John Stevens (c. 1662-1726), Jacobite soldier, diarist, and Spanish scholar. Stevens was the son of a gentleman of the bedchamber to Catherine of Braganza and became an ardent Jacobite, fighting in the Williamite War in Ireland under the sixteen-year-old Henry Fitzjames, the second natural son of James II; his journal of his experiences, first published in 1912, is among the most importance sources on the conflict. After his military career, Stevens carved out a career in London as a prolific writer and translator, largely translating from Spanish and Portuguese, but also producing this abridged English translation of the Monasticon in 1718 (also published the same year in large-paper issue). This was the second (and more successful) English translation after a 1693 version by James Wright, also abridged. Stevens' translation of Dugdale was the result of genuine passion: his 'meagre earnings in Grub Street were spent in pursuit of his consuming interest in monastic history', and he was to publish a two-volume supplement to Dugdale in 1722-23 (which we also have available), 'containing some 500 additional monastic charters in English translation' (ODNB).
