[book itself is tight and clean, with no discernible wear; jacket also quite nice, with just a couple of tiny external nicks (one at top of spine, the other at top right corner of front panel), and several vertical creases in the rear flap]. INSCRIBED in 2004 "to _______ & _____ -- / All the best, / Love" and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. An acknowledged classic of sports literature, this "wonderfully evocative memoir of [the author's] lifelong fascination with the world of sports [is] much more than that. It is also a nostalgic remembrance of decades past, and the way life was lived in simpler times." A later (revised) edition of the book placed the emphasis on New York baseball, which is fair enough, but the book also discusses various football games, the second Joe Louis-Billy Conn fight in 1951, the college basketball scandals of the same year (about which Cohen wrote another classic book, "The Game They Played"), and Muhammad Ali's loss to Joe Frazier in 1971. Cohen is also very astute in his observations about the relationships between politics and the sporting world during the Vietnam War. Signed by Author.

(Of course, because the book was published when Fellini was still active, "all" only covers through AND THE SHIP SAILS ON (1983); in fact, the final chapter, on that film, must have been specially written for the American edition of the book, which was originally published in Italy in 1981. This book "concentrates on the major areas of debate rather than on individual figures" in the sometimes arcane regions of film theory. The author, touted as "a master at making the world of film theory accessible to a largely mystified [and, one might also say, largely uninterested] public," here "provides lucid explanations of theories which involve perceptual psychology and structuralism; semiotics and psychoanalysis; hermeneutics and genre study." As the saying goes, it's the sort of thing you'll like, if you like that sort of thing.

[moderate shelfwear to book; the jacket is heavily edgeworn, with a large chip at the upper left corner of the front panel and some paper loss at the top of the spine, and a couple more tiny chips at the top of the rear panel]. A father-son team produced this novel, "a story about a man who started in the gutter and ended with the stars." Per a contemporary Los Angeles Times review, the narrative covers "the family making its way from Russia, where it had sprung from a rabbinical background; the hard life in the New York slums; the grandmother's terrible determination to give Aaron the chance to go to school; the hunger that drove him to the sweat shops and kept him there for years, despite a spirit that was ever seeking the freedom and the beauty he knew were to be found, and his final emancipation." This was Lester Cohen's third published novel, and his only collaboration with his father, a doctor upon whose experiences as an immigrant the book draws. Lester himself, born in Chicago in 1901, had a fair-to-middling career as a Hollywood writer during the 1930s; his best credit was for the screenplay of OF HUMAN BONDAGE (1934). Blake ("The Strike in the American Novel"): "Meek unheroic little Aaron Traum . becomes an impassioned orator and indefatigable organizer when his garment shop goes out on strike." (cartoon illustrations) Humorous short stories in a racist vein, about "the real world of the colored folk." This sort of racial/ethnic fare was one of the two primary stocks-in-trade (the other being mystery/detective fiction) of this South Carolina-born white author, lauded in the dust jacket blurb as "without question the foremost writer of negro stories living today" -- or, even more cringeworthily, "refreshing stories [about] the trial, tribulations, problems and adventures of those human and amazing negroes -- among them the famous Florian Slappey and Epic Peters -- who are Mr. Cohen's unique creations and for which he is known wherever American magazines and books are read." (Think Amos 'n' Andy, in print.) A number of his stories were adapted as silent film comedies.
