Harting 34". Waarschijnlijk gemaakt in 1934. In passe-partout in lijst.Onder het silhouet de handtekening van Goethe. .

Arnold Joseph Toynbee (1889-1975) was an English historian, a philosopher of history, an author of numerous books and a research professor of international history at the London School of Economics and King's College London. Etching with plate tone, on laid paper with French lily and V[an] G[elder] Z[onen] watermark, sheet size 187 x 286 mm., platemark 140 x 198 mm., by Dirk Harting (also Dirk Herman Michael Harting; 1884-1970). Signed in pencil, monogrammed and dated (1908) in the plate. In fair condition, browned (from previous framing) overall, a dark stain in the top right margin corner.

Portrait of Arnold Toynbee (1852-1883) at the age of 26. After a photograph. Headshot portrait, facing left, with a shirt, tie and jacket.Arnold Toynbee was an English economic historian at Balliol College, Oxford. Toynbee was famously among the first to identify and describe the British "industrial revolution" as an event. His analysis of monopolies and oligopolies was prescient. Toynbee was a thorough historicist and adhered to the inductive method. A social activist and humanitarian, he was also an opponent of laissez-faire economic policy. Toynbee died at the tragically young age of 30.On the top right corner: AET 26.Monogrammed on the top left corner: DH/08.Titled in pen under the portrait. With dedication in pencil: voor Ham 18 Juni '08.On verso collector's mark of Pim van Eekelen [L. 5101].[NL] Arnold Toynbee (1852-1881) werd slechts 30 jaar, maar verwierf desondanks aanzien als academicus. The street is seen from behind, you can spot a fenced backyard with small stairs to the water. Dirk Harting (Salatiga 1884-1970 Haarlem) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, draughtsperson, and print collector, born in Indonesia. His training was at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was a student of Pieter Dupont and Willem Witsen, both accomplished artists and etchers. Pieter Dupont (Amsterdam 1870-1911 Hilversum) was an important Dutch graphic artist, best known for his depictions of work horses. He was a teacher at the Drawing School for Craftmanship (1891-1896) and in 1902 became professor of graphic art at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Abraham Bosse (Tours c. 1604-1676 Paris) was a French designer, etcher, draughtsperson, painter, and art theorist. He wrote several tracts on printmaking and perspective. In good condition. Image area a little discoloured, verso overall browned (both from previous acidic matting). Two small stains in the top left margin corner.

The etching is signed and titled in pencil underneath the picture. The edges of the plate are a bit coloured. l Etching on paper.184x529mm. in the upper left corner and the middle-right is some damage to the paper.
