Venice: in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri (the heirs of Aldus Manutius the Elder and Andrea Torresano the Elder); October 1518. Octavo (6" x 3 13/16", 152mm x 97mm). [Full collation available.] Bound in contemporary Venetian paneled calf with two pairs of silk ties. Wi…th four knotted "Greek style" tools in the center panel. On the spine, three raised bands. Ink manuscript to the fore-edge of the text-block: "POMP. MELA. ET SOLINVS." Small losses along the lower edge, with scuffs and the odd spot of soiling. The corners bumped and the ties perished. The text-block remarkably fresh, with occasional sidelining in ink. A reference in ink manuscript to Pliny in the margin of fol. 119r. Collated complete (including both the q8 and G3 blanks) against the register and UCLA. Ex-libris of Emilio Pittaluga to the title-page, completed in ink manuscript "ottimo esemplare." Bookplate of T. Kimball Brooker laid in. Pomponius Mela (d. AD 45) and Caius (Gaius) Julius Solinus (fl. ca. AD 225) together were the twin stars of Roman (i.e., Latin) ancient geography through the medieval period, and far more influential than Ptolemy, whose Geographical Guidance was largely inaccessible to Continental scholars before it was translated into Latin in 1406. A frequent source of Pliny (whose Historia naturalis has geographical components but belongs properly to a different genre), Mela's De situ orbis bridges the gap between the Greek geographers (Eratosthenes, Ptolemy) and his successors. Solinus wrote his De mirabilibus mundi (On the wonders of the world) -- also called the Polyhistor (very learned), as here -- in the first half of the third century of the current era. The works of Mela and Solinus fill a little more than half the volume (through fol. 127). Four shorter works follow, making the volume a useful collection of geographical works. The first is the Itinerarium -- itinerary -- carried out under Emperor Antoninus Pius (AD 86-161), which lists in order the places along a road as they stretched across the Roman Empire. Vibius Sequester (ca. AD 400) provides a literary parallel; conventionally titled De fluminibus, fontibus, lacubus, nemoribus, paludibus, montibus, gentibus per litteras (fol. 191ff.) it gathers the place-names mentioned in Classical literature -- particularly Vergil and Ovid. Publius Victor is a confected Classical author, made to provide authorship for a XVc (first published 1505) treatise De regionibus urbis Romae liber (fol. 201ff.), which describes the neighborhoods (regiones) of ancient Rome. The volume finishes with the poem of Dionysius Periegetes (sometimes called, as here, Dionysius Afer -- born as he was in Libya in perhaps the AD IIc), a member of the "Second Sophistic," composed in Greek and translated by Priscian into Latin as De orbis situ (fol. 215ff.). These final treatises speak particularly to the lineage of the work through the press of Aldus Manutius (Aldo Manuzio, ca. 1450-1515), the great Venetian humanist-printer whom we have largely to thank for the dissemination of texts in small formats. Thomas Kimball Brooker (Kim, b. 1939) is an American industrialist with a life-long scholarly interest in books. To wit, his Harvard Business School Master's thesis was titled Rare Books as a Hedge against Devaluation and Inflation; he went on to get an MA in Art History and a PhD, both from the University of Chicago. He is the most significant collector -- certainly among the living, perhaps ever, or at the least on par with the likes of J.P. Morgan -- of early printed books, with a particular focus on Aldus Manutius. His collection is being dispersed by Sotheby's in a series of eight auctions, the Bibliotheca Brookeriana, from 2023 into 2026 (to include his the formidable reference library). The present volume was lot 245 in part II (the Aldine Collection D-M) 18 October 2024 in New York. Adams M 1053; Edit16 46864; Renouard, Alde 83/6; UCLA 171; USTC 841939.

Three works in one, half-title to second and third, pp. [8], 158, [24], 47, [1], 1-152, last 2 blank + 4 tipped-in blanks, of which 5 pp. with extensive contemporary ms annotations. Double column, Greek letter, little Roman. Woodcut printer's device to title, t…wo small woodcut geometrical shapes, decorated initials and ornaments. Minimal toning, upper and outer edge of title and first leaf a little frayed, light water stain to upper outer corner of early ll., and to lower outer blank corner of last, two tiny worm holes to upper blank gutter of first half. A very good, unsophisticated, well-margined copy in contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, scuffed, upper hinge starting, small holes to spine, occasional contemporary ms annotations, ms Greek references to the text on rear fep. A very good, unsophisticated copy, in contemporary binding and with interesting early annotations, of this very handsome student collection of ancient geography textbooks and commentaries. 'De situ orbis' by Dionysius Periegetes, he lived in Alexandria in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, was a popular geographical poem on the boundaries of the known world. Pomponius Mela's (1st cent. AD) 'De situ orbis' described in prose the then-known world, dividing it into 5 zones, only two of which he deemed inhabitable. Solinus' 'De mirabilibus mundi' - a compendium of the ancient wonders of the world was a favourite for teaching, especially the chapter on the peoples of remote countries. The collection also includes 'scholia' (commentaries) by the humanists Morel and Papia, some concerning Aethicus' 'Cosmographia', now considered a medieval forgery. This copy was owned by a university student or scholar, who covered in dense ms annotations the margins of the first three chapters of Mela's 'De situ' - on the four parts of the world, and the descriptions of Asia and Europe - adding a few blanks for further notes. The annotations are at times summaries of the text, but mostly provide personal observations and integral information. For instance, the annotator refers to the version of the text found in a 'Codex Parisiensis et manuscriptus', most likely one of the many precious mss of classical works preserved at the Royal Library. He noted information about the author, and provided numerous additional information based on Pliny, Strabo, Ptolemy and other ancient authorities, with reference to specific peoples (e.g., Iberii) and places (e.g., Caspian Sea). Further occasional marginalia show his knowledge of other editions, e.g., by J. Vadianus, and his interest in the etymology of 'Britannia', which our annotator glossed with an additional, quite obscure etymology, as 'a name made of two Hebrew nouns, translated as 'stanum' (tin) and 'agrum' (field) in Latin. An interesting, unsophiticated copy. USTC 450740; Renouard, Estiennes, 145:5; Gilmont 2627; Brunet II, 729-30.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. [BLANKAART'S COPY] Large 4to, pp. [8], 158, [24], 47, [1], 152. Greek and Roman letter; large printer's device on title; floriated initials, typographical head-pieces and simple diagrams; very slight browning, light waterstain to outer upper corners of final gatherings. A very good, wide-margined c…opy in nearly contemporary French vellum; repair to head of spine, small crack to tail of front joint; circular armorial bookplate of John, 3rd Baron Carteret of Hawnes, 1841, on front pastedown; early printed Greek ex libris on label at foot of title. Accurate edition of the two important geographical texts of antiquity, used for centuries as textbooks on the subject. Dionysius Periegetes (2nd century AC) was a Greek poet, who epitomised in verse the geographical knowledge of his time, exerting great influence over Roman and medieval scholarship through the Latin transpositions of his work made by Avenius and Priscian. Pomponius Mela (died c.45 AD) was the most prominent of Latin geographers, largely employed as an authoritative source by Pliny in the geographical section of his Historia naturalis. Following coastlines, Mela provides a ground-breaking description of Western Europe and British Isles, though less detailed as regards Asia and Africa than his Greek colleagues, especially Strabo. With the help of his brother-in-law, the brilliant humanist Isaac Causabon (1559-1614), Henri Estienne made relevant additions and improvements to previous editions, including his father's. The volume also includes Aethicus's Cosmographia, Solinus's Polyhistor and Eustathius of Thessalonika's commentaries on Periegetes, as well as a detailed annotations on the Greek text by Estienne himself and other scholars. The Greek ex libris pasted on title ('from the [books] of Blancardus') is a special mark of affection for the book from its owner. It is notoriously difficult to date these printed slips, but the typeface and ageing of paper suggest this label is c. 17th. As the owner was clearly a scholar of the Greek language, the only plausible 'Blancardus' is Nikolaas Blankaart (1624-1703), who commonly used the Latin transliteration of his surname. A talented Dutch classicist educated in Leiden under the supervision of Salmasius, Blankaart edited Florus, Curtius Rufus and Arrian along with some dictionaries and repertoires of Byzantine grammarians. He is reported to have drawn maps of Asia, Europe and Africa relying on ancient sources (D. van Hoogstraten, Groot algemeen woorden-boek, II, 1725, p. 269), with this book almost certainly playing a crucial role in the endeavour. T-p little soiled, some light age yellowing and thumb marks on margins throughout. Occasional ms. underlining. Bound in early full calf over boards, rebacked, somewhat worn on front covers, red morocco label to spine in compartments. A fine copy. This beautiful edition is a collection of Ancient Greek and Latin texts on geography and cosmography. It includes the famous ethno-geographical description of the world written by the historian Dionysius Periegetes, which was first published by Robert Estienne in 1547, who was the father of Henry, the printer of this edition. This collection includes Pomponius Mela's De situ orbis, the cosmography of Aethicus Ister, and Gaius Julius Solinus's Polyistor, which is a description of the curiosities of the world compiled in Late Antiquity. Except for the geographical parts of Pliny's Historia naturalis, in which Mela is cited as an important authority, the De situ orbis is the only formal treatise on the subject in Classical Latin. This appears here with a commentary by the Spanish humanist Pedro Juan Oliver. The Polyistor is provided with a commentary by the hand of the Jesuit Martin Delrio. The Cosmography, which was issued under the name of Aethicus, its protagonist, is probably the work of a C8th writer, known as Pseudo-Jerome, who was close to the court historiographers of the early Carolingian period. Dionysius Periegetes came from Alexandria and is believed to have written his description at the time of the Roman Emperor Adrian.
