The books particular concern is the réévaluation of philosophy in the period from about 50 B.C. to A.D. 200. The intellectual climate of this time has been dismissively designated eclectic, a term suggesting uncritical assemblage of divergent doctrines by thinkers who lacked originality and analytical acumen. These essays explore the meaning and history of eclecticism in the context of ancient philosophy and seek to provide more accurate descriptions of the work of such philosophers as Cicero, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and the Neopythagoreans.
