De auteurs onderzoeken hoe bijbelse teksten over vrouwen functioneren binnen een patriarchale vertelstructuur en laten zien dat vrouwelijke personages niet alleen passieve figuren zijn, maar soms ook vormen van verzet, ironie of strategisch handelen vertonen binnen de grenzen van de tekst. De titel verwijst naar het bijbelverhaal waarin Sara in haar tent lacht wanneer zij hoort dat zij op hoge leeftijd een kind zal krijgen, een moment dat door de auteurs wordt gelezen als een voorbeeld van ambiguïteit en mogelijke weerstand in de tekst. Het boek situeert zich in de opkomst van feministische theologie en kritische bijbelinterpretatie in de jaren zeventig en tachtig en past literaire analysemethoden toe om de positie van vrouwen en de machtsverhoudingen in bijbelverhalen opnieuw te interpreteren.
