Modern calf antique. First edition, first issue "printed for the author". An extremely popular account of Anson's voyage, four editions were published in the same year as this the first: "of the two first issues published in 1748, one was for the author himself, which is the genuine first, and the other, often called the first, was for the publishers" (Cox). ".no voyage I have yet seen, furnishes such a number of views of land, soundings, draughts of roads and ports, charts and other materials, for the improvement of geography and navigation . which are of the more importance too, as the greatest part of them relate to such Islands or Coasts, as have been hitherto not at all or erroneously described." ("Introduction"). It has now been shown with the discovery of an unpublished account of Anson's voyage by Israel Mauduit (1708-1787) that the true author was indeed Colonel Benjamin Robins, rather than Richard Walter: "an engineer officer of great talent and celebrity.Walter drew the skeleton, and Robins clothed it with flesh and warmth of imagination" (Barrow). Robins was also the author of a pioneering work in ballistics, "New Principles of Gunnery", 1742. Mauduit's was appointed customer of Southampton in 1763, was the author of numerous political pamphlets including "Enquiry into the loss of Minorca to the French" in 1756, something for which Anson was blamed.
