Zustand: good. Edited with an Introduction by H.T. Dickinson. London : J.M. Dent, 1974. Paperback. xxiv, 234 pp. - For a full understanding of eighteenth-century politics we need to appreciate not only what historians now believe to be the objective reality but also how men of the time regarded the situation. Without careful study of the contemporary literature we neglect the political climate, its effect on public opinion, and its influence or restriction on politicians. The aftermath and implications of the 1688 Revolution, the debate on the working of the Whig constitution, and then the pressures for the reform of this constitution towards the end of the century, exercised the minds of both politicians and writers of imagina- tive literature; and in order to highlight these political issues Dr Dickinson has drawn on a wide variety of sources-news- papers, periodicals, pamphlets, sermons, poems, plays and letters. There are over fifty excerpts here, ranging from such writers as Defoe, Swifi, Gay, Samuel Johnson and Southey to politicians and commentators such as Bolingbroke, Richard Price, Burke, Paine and Godwin. Dr Dickinson's introduction establishes the historical framework within which this blend of political and literary writing should be considered, and in prefaces to the three sections of the book he relates the individual extracts to the contemporary political debate. The caricature on the front of this book, dated 1767, shows John Wilkes (with the drawn sword) defending himself against the Political monster, in whose hands is a copy of Magna Charta Reproduced by courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum.
