Dicker escaped the Nazi regime by moving to Zurich. In 1938 he came to America, eventually becoming an infantry Chaplain in the U.S. Army, serving as a front line Chaplain during World War II. While stationed in Japan [1956-58, he began collecting documents for this book. .
