Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Draft script for the 1967 play, seen here under the early working title "I've Been Thinking." Copy used by both playwright and director Herman Shumlin and actress Tresa Hughes, with their annotations on virtually every page (and with annotations in at least one other unidentified third hand as well). Laid in with the script is a review from the December 15, 1967, edition of the "New York Post." Based on the 1964 novel "Reuben, Reuben" by Peter DeVries, about a chicken farmer who decides to investigate the lives of the wealthy. The play ran for 202 performances between December 12, 1967, and June 8, 1968, at the ANTA Playhouse. Herman Shumlin had a long career as both a director of films and plays, most notably the stage version of "Inherit the Wind" (1955) and the film "Watch on the Rhine" (1943) starring Bette Davis. Set in Connecticut. Blue titled Studio Duplicating Service wrappers. Title page present, with credits for playwright Shumlin and novelist DeVries. 106 leaves, with last page of text numbered 2-62. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold screw brads.
