(B&W photographs, endpaper maps) SIGNED by the author on the title page (no inscription). A biography of Chandler, through the lens of his enduring love for his wife Cissy, to whom he was married for thirty years, until her death in 1954 -- a period within which lies almost the entirety of his productive career as a writer. The author "uncovers vestiges of the Los Angeles that was terrain and temptation for Chandler's imagination, including the nearly two dozen apartments and houses the Chandlers moved into and out of over the course of two decades. She also uncovers the life of Cissy Pascal, the older, twice-divorced woman Chandler married in 1924, who would play an essential role in how he came to understand not only his female characters -- and Marlowe's relation to them -- but himself as well. A revelation of a marriage that was a wellspring of need, illusion, and creativity, [the book] provides us with a more complete picture of Raymond Chandler's life and art than any we have had before." Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition. [nice attractive copy, just the teensiest bit of shelfwear to book; jacket similarly nice, soft vertical crease and short corner crease in front flap, minor external handling wear]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED simply ("To ________") and SIGNED by the author on the title page. The "story" in the subtitle was quite deliberately chosen by the author, one of our finest writers on film, who has taken a novelistic approach to Welles's life and who has the writing chops to pull it off, producing a biography that "summons up the man and the artist and does justice to the genius and the fraud; the man of the world and the solitary; the spoiled kid and the sage; the infant prodigy; the chronic fabricator of this own legend; the boy who flirted with homosexuals; the ladies' man; the youth who took Broadway and radio by storm; the begetter of the incomparable CITIZEN KANE." Signed copies are uncommon. Signed by Author. Illustrated by (dj design) Carol Devine Carson (illustrator).…
