In den WarenkorbCouverture souple. Zustand: Bon. Edition originale.

["The centenary of the death of Henri Sainte- Claire Deville, teacher, chemist and technologist, is a reminder of the quite exceptional part he played in laying the foundations of the modern platinum industry. Pasteur said of him that throughout thirty years 'he bore aloft in France and in Europe the sceptre of Mineral Chemistry'; the Academie des Sciences, in honouring his memory with the posthumous award of its Prix Jean Reynaud, described his work on dissociation as 'one of the purest gems in the Crown of French Science'; he and Michael Faraday visited each other back and forth over a period of 30 years, and in 1877 George Matthey wrote that 'the great bond of sympathy between us, beyond that of personal friendship, has been the advancement of a special branch of science which so greatly interests us - the treatment and separation of the platiniferous group of metals for scientific purposes'. He set off to master the problems of inorganic chemistry at high temperatures and on the way he revolutionised the platinum industry., Deville followed up his researches on the production of aluminium by studying the metallurgy of the platinum metals. In 1857 he and Jules Debray devised the lime-block furnace fired by a mixture of oxygen and coal gas which for the first time made it possible to melt platinum and its alloys on a large scale. Their method remained in use until the development of the induction furnace in the 1920s.." -J.C. Chaston in 'Platinum Metals Review', Vol. 25, 1981]. Foxed. Spine rubbed and chipped. Good.…

Schroeder, Sur la theorie de la dissociation de M. H. Sainte-Claire Deville, 1866. 29 pp. Archives Neerlandaises des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles, T. I.]. Very good. [413] "An important work on chemical dissociation, in which Deville demonstrated, by means of ingenious experiments, that equilibria of reactions at high temperatures are frequently different from those at lower temperatures." â" Neville. / "Deville employed very high temperatures and became a recognized authority on the use of this technique. His measurements of the vapor densities of compounds at various temperatures helped to confirm Avogadro's hypothesis. These studies led Deville to his most notable discovery, the dissociation of heated chemical compounds and their recombination at lower temperatures. He heated such substances as water, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen chloride and then cooled them suddenly to recover the decomposition products. This work led to a better understanding of the mechanism of chemical reactions and to significant developments in physical chemistry." â" DSB. / "The effect of heat on chemical reactions was of particular interest. From the time of Bergman it had been realized that reactions often followed a course at high temperatures which differed from that followed at lower ones. In 1857, Henri Deville began a series of studies which established quantitatively a new type of high-temperature reaction. Deville was a distinguished inorganic chemist whose researches on the preparation of various metals had led to methods for the manufacture on a large scale of many industrially important substances. In the course of his studies on the preparation of sodium and potassium and their use as reducing agents in the manufacture of other metals, Deville often used high temperatures. He was aware of the decompositions which often occurred under these conditions, and he suspected that such decompositions were of very frequent occurrence. He therefore undertook the study of reactions which occurred reversibly at high temperature. Such reactions he called dissociations, and by an extensive series of studies he showed the importance of dissociation as a general phenomenon in chemistry." â" Henry M. Leicester & Herbert S. Klickstein, A Source Book in Chemistry, pp. 392 ff. / With 5 chapters : I : Affinite et chaleur. / The Neville copy is the same work, possibly in a different pagination (showing 126 pages â" seemingly numbered 1-126, which is approximately equal to this copy).
