8vo, pp. [8], 504; engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title page, woodcut initials and ornaments; contemporary parchment, manuscript titling on spine; upper joint cracked, title on spine faded, the binding rather soiled; but the textblock is clean and the binding remains sound. Ostensibly, with the ownership signature of Robert Lytton (according to an old bookseller's description which is pasted in). Better than Robert Lytton is a one-page A.L.s. laid in from Henry Folger to Dr. Horace Howard Furness, dated Feb. 19, 1912: "I find among our miscellaneous books a volume of Horace. It seems to be the first volume of a set. Doubtless you have it." Indeed, such is the case. At the end of p. 504: "Finis tomi primi." Mills College Check List 477; not in Riedel-Horatiana.

Folio, 2 volumes in 1; pp. [14], 504; [2], 505-914, [126] index; engraved frontispiece; text largely in double column; woodcut ornaments; contemporary full brown calf, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco label in 2; joints cracked, edges worn, spine with several small chips out; internally reasonably clean and the binding still viable. With two engraved bookplates, the first of John Fiott, St. John's College, Cambridge, dated 1806; and a second armorial bookplate unidentified. Fiott (1783-1866) was the famed British astronomer, one of the founders of the Royal Meteorological Society, and president of the Royal Astronomical Society 1861-63. This is the first Desprez edition of Horace, a durable work that was still being printed well into the 19th century. Little is known about Desprez, a French scholar and a member of the Society of the Sorbonne, other than his edition of Juvenal & Persius Flaccus first published in 1684, and this lasting edition of Horace. Graesse III, 353; Mills College Check List 378; Riedel-Horatiana A-119.
