Per Wikipedia, Georges Portmann (1890 - 1985) Was A French Teacher, Physician And Specialist In The Field Of Otorhinolaryngology, And Member Of The French Senate For The Département Of Gironde. Portmann's Political Career Began In The 1930S When He Was Appointed Mayor Of Sainte-Eulalie In Gironde And Was Subsequently Elected As A Centre-Left Senator Of Gironde In January 1933. This Was A Position He Held For Nearly Four Decades, Firstly Until December 1941 Under The Third Republic, Again From June 1955 Until April 1959 Under The Fourth Republic, And Lastly From April 1959 To September 1971 Under The Fifth Republic. In July 1940, He Voted Full Powers To Philippe Pétain. In January 1941, After The Dismissal Of Pierre Laval, Pierre-Étienne Flandin Appointed Portmann As Secretary General For Information In The Vichy Government, A Position He Held Until April 1942 When Laval Returned To Government. He Entered The French Resistance In 1942 And Hid Jews In His Hospital Whilst Also Using His Position As Mayor To Provide Falsified Ration Cards.
