In unread condition, The binding and the pages are in like new, fine condition, only the corners are a bit bumped. The "Description of the catalogue of the Frick Collection", has 27 pages, also designed by Bruce Rogers and consists of "Its story - its makers - Its Purpose" by Paul Standard (11 pages) and the introduction by Osbert Sitwell. Also from the estate, also in Like New condition. Comes in the original folders of the Frick Art Reference Library (between two card boards). The folders have damage at the edges and some smudges --- --- --- "The catalogue describing these masterpieces in itself an impressive affair, set by hand and printed by hand on English handmade paper folded into pages 12 inches wide by 18 high, in an edition limited to 175 sets of ten volumes each. None of the sets is for sale. All are being presented to a world list of museums, public and university libraries and similar institutions as gifts made possible by Miss Helen C. Frick, who was her fathers' companion in the arts and who has financed all the costs of the catalogue's preparation, research and printing. Of the three volumes now published, one consists of some 350 pages of text and the other two (vol. 2 and 3) showing an aggregate of 155 full page colotype reproductions of the 135 canvases discussed in the text. The work was laid aside in 1932. The sheets of text were completed on the hand-presses of the University of Pittsburgh by David Way . Housed in a custom green cloth chemise which itself is housed in a custom quarter dark-blue morocco slipc…ase with five raised bands, green cloth sides, and gilt spine title. The rarest of Bruce Rogers's books, this work contains the first appearance of his Centaur type in a book. "The Centaur type is an original design of rare cultivation and grace. The Centaur is a book of typographic eloquence of forthright, dramatic simplicity" (Blumenthal, Bruce Rogers, p. 33). The typesetting and presswork are near perfection (see Kelly and Beletsky, The Noblest Roman, p. 39). Rogers also drew the headpiece and initial letter, in a manner suggestive of Tory/Estienne. One of only 135 copies (100 for sale per the colophon; in actuality, only about 60 were for sale, the rest were given away; see ibid., p. 40); printed on dampened handmade Batchelor paper at Carl Purington Rollins's Montague Press, with the wry errata slip tipped in. This copy bears the signed bookplate of Jean Hersholt, the Danish actor, philanthropist and noted Hans Christian Andersen collector and translator, who is perhaps better known for the eponymous Humanitarian Award periodically bestowed at the Oscars ceremonies. Hersholt's shelf label is on the inside of the right-side chemise panel. A near fine, well-preserved copy of this fragile book, with the usual light foxing (here on the title page margin) and small light bump at the spine ends. On the dustjacket, some offsetting from the chemise, minor edgewear and a few dampstains on rear dustjacket panel (leaving faint shadows on rear cover); slipcase lightly rubbed at the corners and edges.
