In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. A smart three volume set of the Colloquies of Erasmus, a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects. Complete in three volumes. With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. Erasmus' Colloquies are a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects which began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for his own pupils. The first official version, of 1518, was described as "a collection of formulae and conversational passages." Notable for its insightful commentary on various aspects of human life and society, the work showcases Erasmus' wit and humor. With sections addressing topics such as manners, education, and theological debates, often through sparkling exchanges between different characters. Written by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, commonly known in English as Erasmus, a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic priest and theologian, educationalist, satirist, and philosopher. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the Northern Renaissance. Translated by Nathan Bailey, an English philologist and lexicographer. Edited with notes from Rev. E. Johnson. Publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume one. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers. A contemporary ink inscription to the half-title with a contemporary ink stamp to the front endpaper. Very Good. None (illustrator). book.…

In den WarenkorbSelection of three letters by the Church Father Jerome of Stridon (Saint Jerome, ca. 342/47-420 CE), edited and annotated by Erasmus. Erasmus felt a profound connection to Jerome. He saw in the ancient Church Father not only a kindred spirit but also a mirror for his own intellectual and spiritual journey. Included in this volume are three letters: first the epistle to Heliodorus on the praise of the solitary life (de vita solitaria), a stirring defence of ascetic withdrawal from the world; second the epistle to Heliodorus on the misery of human life (de miseria vitae humanae), a sombre reflection on the fleeting nature of earthly existence; and third the epistle to the monk Rusticus on avoiding familiarity with women (de mulieribus evitandis), a warning shaped by both monastic ideals and Jerome's personal convictions. Additionally, a short fourth letter addressed to Onasus is included at the end of the volume, though it does not appear on the title page. In this letter he satirically addresses the priest Onasus, who had a deformed nose, and his feeling of being unjustly attacked and being made a fool of in other letters and writings by Jerome. With early manuscript annotations (corrections etc. of the printed text) in the margins and occasional underlining of the text, mainly concerning the third letter, written in three different hands, in both brown and black ink. With a 0.5 cm worm hole in the gutter margin, not affecting the text. Occasional foxing and browning, and some water staining in the fore-edge margin of several leaves. In den WarenkorbImportant collection of sources for the biography of Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536), put together and edited by Petrus Scriverius on the basis of the 1607 edition by Merula of the Compendium vitae, including a number of new sources and four hitherto unpublished letters by Erasmus. The humanist and independent scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) worked in Leiden outside the University, but he was in continuous contact with the most famous Leiden professors. Scriverius added commentaries and connecting texts by which the collection gained weight as materials for Erasmus' biography. Also through the later editions, edited by Thysius, and published by Joannes Maire in 1642 and 1649, the collection became very influential regarding Erasmus' "image" before the first critical biography of Erasmus was published by Joannes Clericus in 1705.With a few (near-contemporary?) manuscript annotations and markings in the margins. In den Warenkorb11 parts in 10 volumes. A complete and uniformly bound set of the monumental edition of the complete works of Saint Augustine of Hippo, printed by the celebrated Froben press. This edition follows the editorial tradition established by Erasmus and Johann Froben in the early 16th century and reflects the enduring influence of Augustine's thought on early modern theology. The present work includes a broad range of Augustine's writings: his dogmatic treatises (De Trinitate, De civitate Dei), polemical works (notably against Pelagianism and Manichaeism), exegetical texts (Enarrationes in Psalmos, Gospel homilies), ascetic and moral discourses, and the Epistolae. This edition represents an early attempt to consolidate Augustine's vast corpus for academic and ecclesiastical use during period following the Council of Trent. It demonstrates the persistence of Augustinian authority in Reformation-era intellectual life, as well as the role of the Swiss printing houses in disseminating patristic texts throughout Europe.Aurelius Augustine (354-430 CE), commonly known as Augustine of Hippo, was a North African bishop, theologian, and philosopher, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western Christianity and Latin patristic thought. Born in Thagaste (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria), Augustine received a classical education in rhetoric and philosophy before embracing Manichaeism and later Neoplatonism. After a period of moral and spiritual searching, chronicled in his Confessiones, he converted to Christianity in 386 CE under the influence of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptised in 387, ordained a priest in 391, and became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395, a position he held until his death.Augustine's vast body of work addresses themes such as original sin, grace, free will, the nature of the Church, and the interpretation of Scripture. His most notable writings include Confessiones, De civitate Dei (the City of God), and De Trinitate. His thought shaped the theological foundations of both medieval Catholicism and later Protestant traditions, particularly through his doctrines of grace and predestination. He died in 430 CE during the Vandal siege of Hippo. Augustine was later declared a Doctor of the Church, and his intellectual legacy remains foundational to Western theology and philosophy. With a manuscript inscription on each of the title pages and a small printed book plate mounted on the front pastedown of volume 1. The bindings are slightly stained and are occasionally slightly bumped and rubbed. The front hinge of volume one is slightly weakened, lacking the upper clasp and anchor plate of volume 7, and the front board of volume 9 is slightly damaged along the fore edge. Internally, the volumes are variably slightly foxed and/or browned, some volumes show very minor water staining, most volumes contain some minor worm holes which affect small parts of the letters. A more detailed condition report, including collations etc., per volume is available upon request. The 10 volumes are overall in very good condition. A handsome and important Renaissance printing of one of the most significant corpora of Christian antiquity. Rare complete in all ten volumes, here uniformly bound.l USTC 686573; VD 16 A 4153; WorldCat 1828402, 1406901978, 1090145458, 1002789099, 35656998, 222081178, 1322263024, 1114269923; cf. for the binder see Einbanddatenbank no. 502297b (rolls nos. r004651 and r003964). Diogo d'Attaide to title-page.A richly annotated copy of the works of the third-century martyr and bishop of Carthage, StCyprian, with later Portuguese provenance. Cyprian (c.210258AD) lived at an early period in the history of Christianity, before the Council of Nicaea (and subsequent councils) had defined orthodox beliefs. Some of the annotations here comment on Cyprian's deviance from accepted doctrine: the treatise on the universality of the Church (pp.294314) has some dense annotations, and one page is crossed through with the note 'Oportet haereses esse' (these must be heresies, p.301). The word 'Exomologesis' (public confession of sin and undertaking of penance) is noted in the margins several times, particularly in Cyprian's letters. This practice was a contentious topic in Cyprian's time. Among those who opposed it were the Novatianists, who, while not at first denying the power of the Church to absolve from sin, affirmed that the mortal sin of apostasy placed the sinner beyond the reach of that power. It is unsurprising that a seventeenth-century annotator should have focused on this practice, now more contentious than ever: Catholic practice had for centuries recommended the private, aural confession and a private penance, while Protestantism rejected the notion altogether either would have found these passages provocative. References to other works by Church Fathers either agreeing with or contradicting Cyprian are also noted in the margins, including Augustine, Arnobius, Cassiodorus, Tertullian, John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Isidore, as well as references to passages in the Bible. While the annotations are predominantly in Latin, there are a few words of Greek, which was the language of the early Christian Church. More modern texts cited are Cesare Baronio (vol.I, p.294) and the Flemish theologian Jacob Pamelius (15361587; vol.II, p.422 and p.455), whose edition of Cyprian was printed in 1566, and Jean Lorin (15591634), whose commentary on Acts was first published in 1605 (vol.I, p.45). All this indicates a reader well-versed in patristics and contemporary theology. The corner of g4 in vol.I has been folded over to preserve the neat early annotation (seemingly the only one in this hand) which clearly states that Cyprian has erred on the subject of baptism performed by heretics. In the treatise on the vanity of idols, the annotator has written 'maleficia' (witchcraft) next to the passage describing the physical torments inflicted on those who worship false gods. USTC records two copies in the US, at Harvard and Yale, and three copies in the UK, at Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the British Library. In den WarenkorbCollection of patristic writings, many of which appear here in print for the first time. The book opens with the spiritual writings of Eucherius (ca. 380-ca. 449 CE), Archbishop of Lyon, including his Intelligentiae spiritalis formulae and two instructional treatises, both of which are printed here for the first time.At the heart of the volume is Eucherius' paraenetic letter to Valerianus, a moral exhortation encouraging the rejection of worldly distractions and the pursuit of true Christian wisdom. Although this letter had been printed previously, it is presented here together with annotations by Erasmus. Also included is a consolatory letter by Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea (330-379 CE), intended to support believers facing the hardships of earthly life. Like the instructional works of Eucherius, this letter also appears here in print for the first time. The final text is a fragment from a letter by Saint Jerome (ca. 342/7-420 CE) to Pammachius (d. 410 CE), defending the doctrine of the resurrection of the flesh and refuting the teachings of John of Jerusalem. The exact date of publication remains uncertain, but it is unlikely that the book appeared before 1520, the year when Chevallon first began using his "'soleil d'or"' printer's device. The pages show some browning and water staining throughout. In den WarenkorbThis volume brings together Erasmus' renditions in Latin of two of Euripides' most enduring tragedies, titled Hecuba and Iphigenia in Aulis, presented alongside the original Greek texts beginning on page 169. Euripides (ca. 480-ca. 406 BCE) was a Greek tragedian of classical Athens. He is one of only three Greek tragedians whose plays have survived in full, the others being Aeschylus and Sophocles. Both plays in the present work explore the devastating costs of war through the eyes of women caught in its aftermath. In Hecuba, the former queen of Troy endures unspeakable losses, the sacrifice of her daughter Polyxena, the murder of her son Polydorus, and ultimately, a brutal act of revenge that leads to her mythical transformation into a howling dog, symbolising her complete descent into grief and rage.Iphigenia in Aulis is set on the eve of the Trojan War, focusing on Agamemnon's impossible decision to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to appease the goddess Artemis and allow the Greek fleet to sail. The play confronts themes of duty, honour, and the personal costs of collective ambition. These, themes echo tragically in Hecuba, which portrays the war's bitter consequences. Together, these tragedies form a poignant narrative arc, from the sacrifices made to start a war, to the wreckage and human suffering left in its wake. With a (partially erased?) manuscript note on the title page ("1822"). The volume presents eight of Plutarch's shorter treatises, addressing themes such as friendship, health, and the nature of the human soul. One of the most notable inclusions is De discrimine adulatoris et amici (How to tell a flatterer from a friend), a treatise Erasmus translated during his time in Cambridge and dedicated to King Henry VIII. The text, which explores the subtle art of distinguishing true friendship from sycophancy, resonated in an era when rulers were often surrounded by flattering courtiers. With characteristic tact, Erasmus hoped the work might serve both as philosophical instruction and as a gentle warning to the young English king, particularly in light of those who had encouraged Henry's war with France.Furthermore, the present work includes two of Plutarch's important medical treatises in Erasmus' translation: De tuenda bona valetudine (Advice on keeping well) and Utrum graviores sint animi morbi quam corporis (Are diseases of the soul more serious than those of the body?). The latter contains strikingly early and thoughtful reflections on what we now recognise as mental illness. Other works included in this volume are: Quo pacto quis efficere possit ut capiat utilitatem ab inimico, reflections on transforming enmity into wisdom and personal growth. In principe requiri doctrinam, on the necessity of wisdom and education in a prince. Cum principibus maxime philosophum debere disputare, a meditation on the philosopher's role in advising those in power. Num recte dictum sit, ???e ß??sa?, on the meaning of the maxim lathe biosas: to live quietly and modestly. De cupiditate divitiarum, a discourse on avarice and the moral corruption born of greed. With a small manuscript note added above the title ("opuscula") and a 17th- or 18th-century owner's inscription by an otherwise unidentified Johannes below the colophon on the final page. Slightly foxed and browned throughout, the fore-edge and lower margins are cut slightly short, barely affecting the printed marginalia. Otherwise in good condition.l Adams p. 654; Ledo pp. 260-66; USTC 655014 (6 copies); Vander Haeghen II, 46; VD 16 P 3718; not in BM STC German; De Reuck. In den Warenkorb2 parts in 1 volume. Second edition, printed in the same year as the first, of Erasmus' version of the Commentaries on the psalms attributed to Arnobius the Younger, a Christian priest active in 5th-century Gaul. Arnobius interprets the psalms allegorically, relating their content to Christ and the Church. First printed in folio by Froben in Basel in September 1522, the present 4to edition was published shortly after that same year in Cologne by Eucharius Cervicornus. It contains Erasmus' preface addressed to Pope Adrian VI, the commentary of Arnobius on the psalms and Erasmus' own extensive commentary on psalm 2, Quare fremuerunt gentes. The present copy is bound in a contemporary Cologne binding, attributed to an anonymous binder active circa 1510. Both boards feature a panel-stamped frame, including three armorial shields of, the city arms of Cologne (ermine field with three open crowns), the arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne (a black cross on a silver field), and a diagonally banded shield, likely the binder's own mark. Inside there are two identical rectangular panels made up of a stamp with bird motifs and the motto "Clamo ad te Domine" ("I call to you, Lord").With two book plates mounted on the front pastedown ("Thomas Brooke F.S.A. Armitage Bridge" and one with the motto "Pro viribus summis contendo"), a small manuscript cypher ("CP") on the title page, and Erasmus' commentary contains manuscript annotations in the margins and on the final blank page by a near-contemporary(?) hand. The binding has been re-backed, the head of the spine is slightly damaged, the corners of the boards are slightly damaged, the original blind-tooled leather on the boards is somewhat dry and cracked, affecting the clarity of the stamps and with some small scratched in the leather on the front board. Some occasional browning and (water-) staining in the margins. Otherwise in good condition.l Bezzel 554; Goldschmidt 57; Jenkins 2.1; USTC 613135; Vander Haeghen II, 10; VD 16 B 3132 (and VD 16 E 2460); not in: BM STC German, De Reuck. Contemporary blind-tooled calf with armorial panel-stamps. Sewn on 4 supports, with corresponding raised bands on the spine, with remnants of 4 pairs of green closing ties, re-backed. In den Warenkorb2 works in 1 volume, ad 2 in 2 parts. A rare and significant edition of De veritate corporis et sanguinis Domini by Alger of Liège (Algerus, ca. 1060-ca. 1131), Benedictine monk of Cluny and one of the most influential medieval theologians on the Eucharist. This major treatise, composed during the so-called "second Eucharistic controversy", defends the doctrine of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist against the teachings of Berengarius of Tours. Admired by both medieval scholars and later by Erasmus, Alger's work remained central to Catholic theology well into the sixteenth century. This copy represents the Erasmian edition, prepared under Erasmus's supervision with his corrections and editorial guidance. His involvement gave the text a new humanist form and authority, making Alger's theology newly relevant at a time when Eucharistic doctrine was again fiercely debated during the Reformation. Erasmus's careful attention to clarity and Latinity situates this edition within his broader humanist programme of restoring theological texts to philological precision and doctrinal coherence.Only a handful of copies of this edition are known, and no record of it appears in recent sales databases, underlining its rarity on the market. It is the second edition overall, following the first printing in Freiburg im Breisgau (1530), and the first to be issued by Peter Quentel in Cologne.Bound together with the Opera of Vigilius (1555) and a Commentarius opposing the Christological views of Georg Cassander (1555), this important Sammelband reflects the continuing Catholic polemic against Reformation-era innovations in both Eucharistic theology and Christology. The vellum is slightly dampstained, lacking part of the bottom closing tie on the front. Some stains and browning throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: BM STC German p. 20; USTC 626331; Vander Haeghen II, 6; VD 16 A 1871; cf. In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. CYPRIANUS, Thascius Caecilius [St Cyprian of Carthage]; ERASMUS, Desiderius, editor. Opera Divi Caecilii Cypriani Episcopi Carthaginensis. Basel: Johann Froben, 1521. A remarkable pair of later composite display sheets preserving the principal original woodcut and letterpress illustrations from the 1521 Froben edition of St Cyprian edited by Erasmus of Rotterdam. Detailed comparison with the digitised copy at the Pitts Theology Library, Emory University, establishes that the apparently separate components mounted upon the second sheet belong to this same 1521 publication and are not miscellaneous ornaments taken from unrelated Froben books: Emory independently catalogues five principal graphic elements from its copy — the historiated title-page border, Johann Froben's printer's device, an animal-and-putti headpiece, an ornamental page border and a narrative woodcut of Venus and Cupid — and all are represented within the present pair; the book additionally contains smaller historiated initials, so these sheets preserve substantially the complete suite of its major independent woodcut compositions rather than literally every decorative element. The first sheet reconstructs the celebrated title page, centred upon Opera Divi Caecilii Cypriani Episcopi Carthaginensis and the imprint Apud inclytam Basileam ex officina Frobeniana. An. M.D.XXI., within the monumental historiated border designed by Ambrosius Holbein, elder brother of Hans Holbein the Younger. Across the upper register is the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, with ARMINIVS and VARVS QVINTILIVS identified amongst the densely packed combatants; Emory independently identifies the scene as the Germanic victory over the Roman forces of Publius Quinctilius Varus. The lateral borders incorporate personifications of the Virtues and Vices, including Temperance, Justice, Charity, Fortitude, Ignorance and Truth, while the lower composition contains the classical subject of the Calumny of Apelles. The companion sheet brings together the remaining major ornamental elements from the volume: long Renaissance grotesque and foliage borders corresponding directly with the original ornamental page frame preserved at Emory, an animal-and-putti headpiece, the narrative Venus and Cupid block, and Johann Froben's celebrated printer's device with crowned serpents entwined around a caduceus and a bird above. Eton's bibliographical record confirms the 1521 Basel edition, its November 1521 colophon, the Ambrosius Holbein title-page border, a further woodcut border on a2r, Froben's printer's device on the final verso and historiated initials; VD16 C6509; Adams C3150. At an unknown later date the original 1521 printed elements were carefully excised from their book leaves and laid down onto stiff paper stock, the title-page material being reconstructed approximately in its original configuration and the remaining principal ornaments arranged together on the companion sheet. They are therefore historical composite display sheets rather than intact original leaves, but direct comparison with the surviving institutional copy now establishes their unusual significance as a substantially comprehensive assemblage of the major woodcut programme of a single Erasmus/Froben publication. Each backing sheet approximately 28.7 × 22.4 cm. Very good decorative condition overall, the original impressions strong, dark and detailed; expected age-toning, occasional spotting and marking, minor surface and edge wear and visible joins between the mounted elements. An exceptional conjunction of Erasmus, Johann Froben, Ambrosius Holbein, Arminius, Roman history, classical mythology and Northern Renaissance graphic design.…
