It is supplemented by an extended autograph manuscript introduction, notes on the interleaved pages, and botanical samples - primarily leaves - laid in. Descemet frames the work as a study of "materia medica". The Garden o…f Apothecaries was established in 1628 by the Paris School of Pharmacy. It was intended as a resource for the students as well as to provide medicinal herbs for the apothecary trade, which operated in the areas around the garden. Descemet (1732-1810), who studied medicine in the city, probably made use of the garden in his education. His catalogue the first edition of which was published in 1741 - lists 820 species and uses the classification system of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, which was based on the typology of flower and fruit shapes rather than their medicinal uses. It became the main guide to the garden and was sold onsite. The manuscript material was presumably written for a planned third edition. These correct and expand on the catalogue entries, adding extra information, such as the similarities between borage and buglosses, and additional uses of the plants, including as dyes. Although another edition never materialized, Descemet's work on the garden was a continuing project; the Wellcome Collection holds his manuscript dated circa 1775 on "the virtues of plants" based on the present catalogue. He was writing at a fertile time for the subject, contemporaneous to the establishment of the Paris College of Pharmacy in 1777, now the faculty of pharmacy at Paris-Cite university. Octavo (181 x 115 mm), pp. xxii, [2], 136. Interleaved with blanks, bound with 96 pages of manuscript written in black ink, 28 blank pages at rear. Head- and tailpieces, historiated initials. Contemporary mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, 5 raised bands, dark brown morocco label lettered "Mattere Medicial", marbled endpapers, red edges. Contemporary ownership label of one Johannes-Jacobus-Paulus Roger Charitaeus. Stripping to leather, loss to spine ends and upper compartment, extremities worn, front joint restored, fore edge marked: a very good copy of a working book.
