Pierre-Joseph Desault (1738-1795) was a French anatomist and one of the leading surgeons in France at that time. He established the clinical school of surgery at the Hotel Dieu. Trois volumes reliés demi veau à petits coins, dos lisses, pièces de titre. Quelques traces de frottements, dix premières pages du tome II tachées, sinon beaux exemplaires. Le chirurgien Pierre-Joseph Desault (1744-1795) fut l'un des premiers professeurs de l'École Pratique de Chirurgie de Paris. Il innova dans le traitement de l'anévrisme et fut également l'un des pionniers de la chirurgie urologique. Le troisième volume, consacré à ce dernier sujet, a été augmenté, après la mort de Bichat, par Ph.J.Roux de différents mémoires dont l'un sur la méthode de percussion d'Avenbrugger, intitulé : Mémoire sur l'application comparée de la Percussion de la poitrine et de la Pression abdominale, pour la connoisssance des maladies aiguës et chroniques des organes de la poitrine. Es werden die chirurgischen Eingriffe am Kopf nach der Lehre der beiden führenden Koryphäen der Pariser Chirurgenschule geschildert. Verletzungen, Contusionen u. Brüche der Hirnschale, etc. nebst der Trepanation umfassen den neurochirurgischen Teil, daneben werden noch die Krankheiten der Augen, der Ohren, Nase, des Mundes und des Halses behandelt. In Frankreich, wo der Chirurg seit Jahrhunderten höher bewertet wurde als in deutschen Landen, wurde 1731 die "Academie de Chirurgie" gegründet und in aller Form einer Fakultät gleichgestellt. Damit wurde die Verbindung zwischen Chirurgie und Barbierhandwerk für immer aufgehoben. Durch Unterricht und die Erteilung von Preisen für besondere Leistungen hat die Academie den Stand der Chirurgen mächtig gefördert. Für die großen Leistungen der französischen Chirurgie zum Ausgange des 18.Jahrhunderts stehen 2 Chirurgen ersten Ranges: J.P.Desault (1743-1795) und der mit ihm befreundete Francois Chopart (1743-1795). Der Erstere wurde der Begründer der neueren französischen Chirurgie und "erster Chirurg Europas". Schüler aus aller Welt kamen in seine Klinik. Die Lehre von den Frakturen und Luxationen, sowie Pioniertaten in der Gefässchirurgie schafften ihm dauernden Ruhm. Choparts Name ist mit der partiellen Fussabsetzung und der eingehenden Bearbeitung der Erkrankungen der Harnorgane verküpft.
