The lit…erary and cultural heritage of the Ramayana and Indian classical music are both living traditions and key constituents of the Indian identity. It is indeed impossible to imagine an India of the past present or future without either. Reference to this musical tradition in the Ramayana the earliest literary work in classical Sanskrit is therefore a propitious context in which a composite legacy of Music Literature may be examined. Ramayana has a fundamental association with music. The poet Valmiki is himself present as a protagonist within the Ramayana narration and initiates Lava and Kusa to render the Ramayana musically. Their music follows the tried and tested Marga style the canonical approach of Indian classical music its earliest references appear first in this first and definitive epic of India. The musical heritage of Valmiki's Ramayana is being explored and documented in the present monograph for the first time by Dr. Subhadra Desai a vocalist of Indian classical music and Sanskrit scholar. Subhadra's research records references in Ramayana of technical terms of music and its principles and practices that apply to Indian classical music even today. The allusions to Gandharva Marga Sruti Svara Sthana Murchana Jati Karana Tala Laya in the Ramayana establish the salient features of music of the epic era and relate it to musical traditions of the present time. Valmiki does not confine himself to merely musical terms he also ascribes value of discipline improvisation and emotion in the preparation for and performance of music. In addition many other references such as the music intrinsic in nature use and significance of a range of musical instruments and also detailed accounts of interface of music and society constitute the musical world of Valmiki. 140 pp.

Index In India as elsewhere in the world, music and literature have often converged since earliest times. In the hymns and songs through millennia, India inherits a remarkable legacy where exceptional literature finds inspiring voice. This tradition of the synthesis of literature and music that germinated in India in the Vedic Age remained alive and vibrant through the centuries in the work of Saint-poets, who adopted music as a medium to express their deepest realization of Truth. This powerful medium of self expression through songs was shared by women who belonged to different times and spaces across India: spontaneous outpourings of inspired women. The first section of the book is dedicated to the women seers of the Vedic era and their hymns. Vedic hymns are traditionally practised by various schools of Samagana in present times. Some of these hymns, attributed to women, are found in the SamavedaSamhita that contains the earliest reference to music in India. Thus, a preserved legacy of the first songs of women seers is available in the living traditions of Samagana. The second section explores the women seers and saints from the multiple strands of the Bhakti era from the 6th century to the 20th century. These seers belonged to different regions, and sang in their own mother tongue. Largely preserved in oral traditions and in different genres of Indian music, their songs constitute an invaluable literary and musical legacy, which bear the message of transcendence, sublime surrender and, sometimes, even an assertion of women s freedom. The abiding influence of the songs, albeit uneven and scattered among communities in present day India, is evidence of the deep imprint they left in their own time, as well as their resonance in our life of today.
