Sous une forme romanesque dans laquelle un baron allemand épris de philosophie et amoureux des philosophes se trouve à Paris, critique des philosophes et en particulier de la doctrine matérialiste de d'Holbach. En réaction aux philosophes matérialistes, Crillon avait déjà publié L'homme moral. Par un récit alerte, placée sous l'aune du bon sens, l'auteur met en scène la secte des philosophes en les raillant sous d'habiles conversations, l' effet est d'autant plus efficace qu'il n'apparaît que pour le lecteur, le narrateur n'étant qu'un naïf, éperdu de philosophie et des philosophes, son incompréhension et son désarroi masquant la critique de philosophes solidaires et agissant selon des principes (l'athéisme, le matérialisme) plutôt que par philosophie. Apocryphal memoirs. Under a novelistic form in which a German baron enamored with philosophy and in love with philosophers finds himself in Paris, critique of philosophers and in particular of d'Holbach's materialist doctrine. In reaction to the materialist philosophers, Crillon had already published L'homme moral. Through a lively narrative, placed under the auspices of common sense, the author stages the sect of philosophers by mocking them under skillful conversations, the effect is all the more effective as it appears only to the reader, the narrator being only a naive person, desperate for philosophy and philosophers, his incomprehension and dismay masking the criticism of solidarity philosophers acting according to principles (atheism, materialism) rather than through philosophy. The second volume is placed under different auspices, the narrator, prey to doubt, questions himself and monologues on all that he has heard, he meets a wise old man who will answer his interrogations on human nature, truth, etc. This work, in the mass of anti-philosophical writings is noteworthy, because it does not fall like so many others into a frontal and theoretical criticism, it stages a simple man prey to his doubts, confronted with the dogmas (2) 4pp. (2) 304pp. et 352pp.

L'auteur du présent ouvrage, anon…yme, s'attribue sur la page de titre les Mémoires philosophiques du Baron de *** (elles-mêmes signées de la main de l'abbé de Crillon et publiées pour la première fois en 1777), et présente Les soirées de Londres comme la suite de ces Mémoires philosophiques. Malgré nos recherches, nous n'avons pu trouver trace d'aucun autre exemplaire de l'ouvrage dans les fonds catalogués disponibles en ligne des bibliothèques publiques mondiales, ni même la moindre référence audit ouvrage dans quelque écrit que ce soit. On ne saurait donc déterminer s'il s'agit d'une oeuvre restée inconnue de l'abbé de Crillon ou bien de celle d'un imitateur. Le propos tenu dans Les soirées de Londres, cependant, s'inscrit dans le combat contre les philosophes matérialistes que menait l'auteur des Mémoires philosophiques. Le style, quant à lui, ne nous semble pas s'écarter de celui de ce dernier. Les Mémoires philosophiques, en effet, mettent en scène un narrateur naïf, admiratif des philosophes. Seul le lecteur, à travers le dialogue, décèle leur hypocrisie : esclaves de leur dogme, ils en viennent à oublier jusqu'aux méthodes de la philosophie. Dans une seconde partie de l'ouvrage, le narrateur, désabusé, remet en question l'ontologie matérialiste. Il rencontre alors un vieillard qui l'éclaire sur la véritable nature du monde. Les soirées de Londres reprend ce-même motif sous une forme condensée : le narrateur y reproduit des conversations entendues au cours de soirées réunissant des intellectuels de toute l'Europe. Mais la parole appartient surtout à un mystérieux docteur espagnol qui, avec une virtuosité qui laisse l'assemblée abasourdie, retourne contre eux les arguments des matérialistes. Page de titre émargée en partie et remontée.
