Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Starring Oona Chaplin as a V.A.D. (Voluntary Aid Detachment), and Suranne Jones and Hermione Norris as trained nurses, The Crimson Field is a gripping drama set in a tented hospital on the coast of France, where plucky real-life V.A.D. Olive Dent served two years of the Great War, and kept this extraordinarily vivid diary of day-to-day life ever cheerful through the bitter cold, the chilblains, hunger and exhaustion. Resilient, courageous and resourceful, nurses, doctors and patients alike do their best to support each other. A Christmas fancy-dress ball, a concert performed by a stoic orchestra covered in bandages, church services held in a marquee and letters from Blighty all keep spirits up in camp, as wounded soldiers suffer terribly with quiet dignity on the makeshift wards, and nurses rush round tirelessly to make them as comfortable as possible. With original illustrations throughout by fellow V.A.D.s, Olives memoir is a fascinating period piece, a rare first-hand account of this little-known story, which will resonate very strongly with viewers of The Crimson Field. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Three accounts of the brave women volunteers of the V.A.Ds during the Great War Although the wars of the later 19th century, such as the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, offered insights into what warfare would become as the industrial age developed, nothing could prepare anyone for the global conflict that became the First World War. Here was a lethal combination of warring nations, whose troops were armed with the most sophisticated weapons that technology could devise, each with the means of mass production to manufacture and deliver them. For the first time it was possible to wage war on a grand scale on land, in the air and beneath and upon the oceans. This was a war where millions of men took part in battle and, in consequence, stripped the production and support services workforces from their home countries. Women, already impatient for political reform, stepped forward to make a vital contribution to the war effort and in so doing changed their status in western society forever. There were many volunteer organisations who were relied upon to support the fighting troops, including the Scottish Women's Hospitals, the F.A.N.Ys, the Y.M.C.A and those who are the subject of this book-the V.A.Ds-the Voluntary Aid Detachments. Three quarters of V.A.Ds were women and girls and they became ambulance drivers, mechanics, cooks, clerks and learned trades which were normally the province of men. But it is in their role as nurses during the conflict for which they are especially remembered. The V.A.Ds included both trained and untrained nurses who worked principally under the direction of the Red Cross and the Order of St. John. This special Leonaur book about the V.A.Ds, published to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, contains three essential and riveting first-hand acounts by those who served, and provides invaluable insights into the developing role of women during those years of crisis. Recommended.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket. …

First edition, first impression, of this memoir of two years spent serving on the Western Front, 1915-17. "A V.A.D. in France serves to illustrate the ways in which women of Dent's class were able to face the realities of war. It is a sentimental and often romantic account that refuses to be disillusioned" (Potter, p. 202). A teacher by profession, Dent (1884-1930) enrolled as a nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment and was sent to France in November 1915. Published while war was still raging, her account is unusual: "many of the memoirs and stories constructed by women from their experiences and feelings relating to the Great War did not year for some years after 1918, despite the intensity of feeling involved" (Atkin). The penultimate chapter covers the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. "One lived very many times in a torrent of emotion, agonized by a flood of pity, racked by an intensity of sympathy, tortured by an exquisite, mental pain, almost overwhelmed by the passion to help to fight for those lives" (p. 334). After the end of hostilities, Dent worked as a journalist in London, writing for the Daily Mail and the Lady. Jonathan Atkin, A War of Individuals: Bloomsbury Attitudes to the Great War, 2013; Jane Potter, Boys in Khaki, Girls in Print: Women's Literary Responses to the Great War, 1914-1918, 2005. Octavo. Frontispiece drawing of a medical officer's winter quarters, illustrations in text, all by R. M. Savage and others. Light brown cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover with full-panel black vignette incorporating title. With dust jacket. Contemporary and mid-century ownership inscriptions ("Lond. 1919" and "C. R. Elliott") on front free endpaper. Extremities bumped and lightly soiled, edges foxed: jacket flaps without price as issued, ink staining on rear panel, chipping and creasing, shadows of former adhesive tape repairs on verso, one short tear expertly repaired with Japanese tissue: a very good copy in like jacket.…
