So bezeichnete der damalige US -Präsident Ronald Reagan die Auseinandersetzung als einen nicht nachvollziehbaren 'dispute over the sovereignty of that little ice-cold bunch of land down there' zwischen zwei Alliierten im Kampf gegen den Kommunismus, sollte den Briten aber schließlich doch die Unterstützung der Vereinigten Staaten zusichern. In der Tat ist auch heute, rund 25 Jahre später, noch die Frage, warum 236 britische und 700 argentinische Soldaten für die vermeintlich unbedeutenden Inseln kurz vor der Antarktis (die zum damaligen Zeitpunkt 1.800 Menschen und 60.000 Schafe beheimateten) sterben mussten, ein vieldiskutiertes Thema. So erscheinen Erklärungsversuche für die Auseinandersetzung anhand der 'klassischen' Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen äußerst problematisch und unzureichend. Die wichtigsten Denkschulen der internationalen Beziehungen würden wohl behaupten, dieser Krieg hätte gar nicht stattfinden dürfen.[.]Es schien also für beide Seiten um einen 'symbolischen' Krieg zu gehen.Sinnvoll erscheint deshalb der Versuch einer Analyse anhand eines 'anders denkenden' Ansatzes: dem der 'Kritischen Geopolitik' (oder auch 'critical geopolitics' nach Ò Tuathail). Innerhalb dieser Hausarbeit wird zunächst der Falklandkrieg als solcher kurz abgerissen, historische Grundlagen sowie die postmoderne Theorie der Kritischen Geopolitik erläutert und schließlich das 'kritisch- geopolitische Auge' mit besonderem Fokus auf die Medien- und Regierungskommunikation in Großbritannien angewendet werden. Durch Sprache erschaffene Geografien und Raumbilder sollen erkannt, analysiert und gedeutet werden. Des Weiteren sollen die tieferen Motive eben dieser Art von Geopolitik herausgearbeitet und die Wirkung auf die Bevölkerung erkannt werden.Ziel ist also nicht die Frage nach dem 'warum ' ausschöpfend zu beantworten, sondern vielmehr die Frage nach dem 'wie ': Wie wirkten Raumbildern und geschaffene Identitäten in der Regierungs- und Medienkommunikation zu Beginn des Krieges Wie halfen geopolitische Diskurse den Krieg zu legitimieren Welche Interessen lagen hinter diesen Interpretationen der geopolitischen Wirklichkeit Diese Fragen aufzuwerfen und anhand von konkreten Beispielen analysierend zu beantworten ist Ziel dieser Arbeit.
