In turn, Christendom began to lose its coherence during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and by the fifteenth century Europe had emerged as a rival term, a Europe in which the landed magnates had capitulated to the omnipotent and ubiquitous prince, commerce as well as land now being a source of wealth. These changes, and others which went with them, are the subject of this book, which is divided into three sections covering roughly the fourth to the ninth centuries, the tenth to the twelfth, and the thirteenth to the fifteenth. No detailed narrative of events is attempted, but the argument is illustrated wherever possible by concrete examples designed to reveal the interaction of ideas and abstractions with the hand to mouth devices of everyday life, the elaboration of systematic policies out of the ambitious and anxious expedients of peasants, barons, bishops, merchants and kings.
