A little repaired fraying of the cloth to the spine edges, old dry humidity line marks to the edges of the black paper end papers, ink ownership marking to the half-title page, hinges sound, without any foxing and in Good condition. Boards show moderate bumping to head and tail of spine and corners, with light shelf wear overall. Text block has moderate age toning and several instances of light soiling to edges, light plus age toning to pages interiorly throughout, pencil from prior owner Dr. Ronald Paulson (largely confined to Cooper's Hill and Epistles), and Ronald Paulson ex libris on the front paste down. Paulson, formerly professor of English literature at Yale and Johns Hopkins, was a leading authority on William Hogarth, and the author of twenty-three works on English literary and art history. The contents are clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, which is faded to the edges and spine. A comprehensive collection of original poems, political speeches, elegies and eulogies, translations, and 'The Sophy' by Sir John Denham (c.1614-1669), an Anglo-Irish poet and courtier. The compilation was first published in 1928 by Yale University Press. This second edition incorporates eleven new poems into Appendix A, helping to complete the Denham canon; includes a revision of pp. 50-53, which deal with the editions of Cooper's Hill and possible sources for the "Thames couplets"; and adds two tables of errata and addenda. 8vo, pp. xxviii, 223; contemporary panelled calf, upper joint cracked but holding; later morocco label on spine, and gilt crest at foot of spine/ First and only edition: a posthumous publication of work by Sir John Denham (1615-69). It seems to have been rescued from oblivion because it had come to the notice of Samuel Woodforde, who had been a university contemporary of Denham's son: this young man, also John, who perhaps died young, may have passed it to Woodford. In any case, this edition was published by Samuel's son Heighes Woodford (1663-1725), who was a cleric and vicar of Epsom, Surrey: he dedicates the book to the Earl of Derby, who was married to Denham's granddaughter. Well before its publication, however, Denham's version had effectively been overtaken by the famous metrical version by Tate and Brady (1696), which is perhaps why it was never reprinted. Nevertheless, it repays reading, if only for Denham's own preface, here on pp. xiii-xxviii.
