Legatura ottocentesca in cart. rigido con titoli ms. al dorso. Antiporta leggermente rifilata, peraltro esemplare in buono stato di conservazione. Si tratta di un'elegante pubblicazione edita per celebrare la presa di Port Mahon (Minorca) per mano dei Francesi. La trattazione comprende testi letterari elogiativi, ma anche interessanti annotazioni e relazioni storiche che descrivono gli eventi ed offrono informazioni e notizie sull'isola di Minorca.

Interessante "summa scientifica" settecentesca. Il primo volume è dedicato prevalentemente a questioni di fisica, mentre il secondo spazia in vari campi della ricerca: geologia, studio sulla luce, microscopi, meteore, ecc. Riccardi vol. Viii, 135, (1) , with 14 folded engraved plates. Rebound modern. First edition of an important and rare work on microscopy. Giovanni Maria della Torre (1710-1782) was an Italian scientist and corresponding member of the academies of Paris, Berlin and the Royal Society of London. He perfectioned the oculars of telescopes and succeeded, like Toricelli, in constructing powerful miscroscopes by using small glass globes. Della Torre was a man of wide culture and of wide scientific curiosity. His studies led him into the history of philosophy, optics, and microscopy (he made several new histological identifications with an excellent compound microscope that he himself had built) ". (DSB). The first 44 pages deal with the construction of different kinds of microscopes, illustrated with 2 detailed plates. The rest of the work deals with objects observed through the microscope. Paris, Jean-Thomas Hérissant, 1760. 12mo (16.3 x 9.2 cm). xxiv, 399 pp., one large folded map of Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and surroundings, and five folded plates with panoramas and other views of the volcano, caldera, etc. Contemporary full mottled calf. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments with gilt floral vignettes and small red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers, marbled edges. = The first French translation by Abbé Péton of Giovanni Maria della Torre's (1712-1782) "Storia e fenomeni del Vesuvio", largely dealing with the recent eruption of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. Péton edited the work and added new information. It includes a list of works/authors writing about Mount Vesuvius from 1631 onwards, and the lengthy "Dissertation critique sur les opinions courantes touchant les phénomènes du Vésuve et des autres volcans; par le pere Gaetan d'Amato", followed by the supplemental notes made by Della Torre in 1860, which were published in Italian in 1761. The last plate depicts the situation of the caldera on 30 April 1759. Rubbing to the boards, a few spots, small hole in the rear endpapers, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Ward and Carozzi, 2185.
