Delille, Jacques [J. Esménard] Jacques Delille (22 June 1738 - 1 May 1813) was a French poet, freemason and translator. He was born at Aigueperse in Auvergne and died in Paris.

In den WarenkorbDelille's French translation of Georgiana Cavendish's best-known poem, The Passage of the Mountain St Gothard (1799) appeared twice in 1802: here, and in a separate edition with plates (also published by Prosper in London). It is unclear which appeared first. The poem was written during Georgiana's exile, and the translation is preceded with reciprocal poems of dedication between author and translator. 8vo (205 × 120 mm), pp. 115, [1], plus engraved frontispiece. This is a bi-lingual text of this notable poem penned by the more notable Duchess as she traversed, with Bess, her daughter, the Saint Gothard Pass during a return trip to England in 1793. The allegorical copperplate frontispiece by Boizot was etched by Anselin. This text features a lengthy introduction by the Editors, and very lengthy notes to the verses in both English and French. Delille had sojourned during the French Revolution in England under the patronage of the Duchess of Devonshire. First edition. The Dithyrambe is one of the most celebrated pieces of verses by Delille. He composed it on the occasion of a fete organized by Robespierre and by his command in honor of L'Etre Supreme.
