Nel 1978 Janet Delaney si trasferisce nel quartiere di South of Market a San Francisco perché la posizione era centrale e l'affitto a buon mercato. Durante i fine settimana comincia a fotografare, con la sua macchina fotografica di grande formato, il cantiere di quello che oggi è il Moscone Convention Centre. Dopo aver assistito alla demolizione notturna di un albergo residenziale adiacente, Delaney decide di registrare gli effetti che il rinnovamento urbano ha su residenti poveri, immigrati e working class. Delaney si unisce quindi agli sforzi e alle proteste degli abitanti del luogo contro il trattamento che la città stava loro riservando e comincia a fotografare e intervistare i suoi vicini nelle loro case e nei luoghi di lavoro. South of Market non è una rappresentazione romantica del passato della città, ma piuttosto la testimonianza di una comunità scomparsa formata da operai, proprietari di piccole imprese, famiglie con bambini, artisti e gay.
