In den WarenkorbSydney : Woolcott and Clarke, [1853 or 1854]. Folio, disbound, original illustrated wrappers lithographed by John Degotardi (old paper reinforcement to original stitching and small closed tear at fore-edge), 6 pp of engraved music notation for voice and piano; page 2 has apublisher'sadvertisement at the head of the music; internally very clean, a good example. A rare and desirable piece of early Sydney sheet music. The only copy in Australian collections which appears on Trove of the Woolcott and Clarke edition, with its superb lithographed cover by Degotardi, is held in the State Library of New South Wales (contained in a publisher's presentation album dated 1854). Another example is also held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales. The more commonSydney edition is that ofJ. R. Clarke (1853), which hasa non-illustrated cover. A later edition with illustrated cover - also only held in the State Library of New South Wales - was published by J. Moore (1856-57).…

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 64 x 100 mm (mount);verso blank (i.e. without photographer's imprint); both the print and the mount are in very good condition. New South Wales Parliament House is the oldest public building in continual use in Australia, having formerly been the northern wing of Governor Macquarie's Rum Hospital, completed in 1816. At the far right of this view can be seen the Legislative Council Chamber, a prefabricated cast-iron building that was manufactured in Scotland, exported to Melbourne, subsequently purchased by the New South Wales Government for £1,835, and erected in 1856. Along with the nearby St. Stephen's "Iron Church" (1855), it was one of the two most significant pre-fabricated buildings in Sydney. We have tentatively attributed this photograph to John Degotardi senior (1823-1882). Of the photographic artists active in Sydney in the late 1860s and early 1870s, Degotardi was unquestionably the most prolific documenter of Sydney's architectural landmarks - its civic edifices and its private residences - as well as its majestic harbour. Degotardi published his views in various formats, but notably as cartes de visite without a printed back mark, as in this case.…

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, 128 x 190 mm; laid down recto of a 19th-century album leaf with a fully contemporary caption beneath: Potts Point, Woolomoloo [sic]; a very stromg print with rich tonal range, in excellent condition. A rare early photograph of the magnificent Potts Point mansion "Bomera", which was built in 1856 by architect John F. Hilly and still stands at 1 Wylde Street. The unidentified two-storey mansion visible behind and slightly to the left of "Bomera" appears to be situated roughly on the spot now occupied by the mansion "Tarana" (1889). This photograph was taken from almost the same vantage point on Mrs. Macquarie's Road as one by theAmerican & Australasian Photographic Company (Charles Bayliss and Beaufoy Merlin) which is held in the SLNSW (Grantham Castle and Campbell Lodge and other mansions on Potts Point from Mrs. Macquarie's Road.Call NumberON 4 Box 60 No 367). The A&APC image is given a rather broad approximate date of 1870-75. We have tentatively attributed this photograph (as well as the other three from the same source) to John Degotardi senior (1823-1882). Of the photographic artists active in Sydney in the late 1860s and early 1870s, Degotardi was unquestionably the most prolific documenter of Sydney's majestic harbour and of the buildings - both civic edifices and private residences - which were the architectural landmarks overlooking the foreshores of its many bays and inlets. He published his views in various formats. …
