Dark mauvish cloth cover with faded sp. with thin line down centre, this is actually some kind of early private library rebind with new endpapers. t.p. dated 'An VIII', which is 1799, the full 4 volume set was issued 1799-1800. 592+(1, errata), red edges; 2 holes in half-title with some loss of characters, t.p.has two creases, one vertical one horizontal, plus some crumpling towards top, first leaf of text which immediately follows has tear with slight loss in bottom margin and gutter slightly opening on recto, remainder of textblock clean, tight and unmarked but final errata sheet has tear from outer margin now repaired with transparent tissue, plus a couple of horizontal ripples (these also occur decreasingly back into main text to about p.550, though are hardly serious and clearly a result of binding method). Small early sig.+number top front end-paper. An important and original work on the nature of language and thought by an important French Republican 'philosophe', better known for his proto-anthropological writings and natural history approach to human affairs.
