Includes folding street map (trimmed to western edge) and folding East Prospect engraving, as well as numerous other plates. Title page has 1.5 inch strip missing at base and is loose. Full leather, but both boards detached and spine split so a candidate for rebinding, in which original boards could be re-used. Internal condition, which is generally clean and bright, merits this.4to. 370pp + plates and section from Payne's Register inserted between pp208 and 209.

There is a little worm activity to the title page but the most persistent has given up by p7 of the introduction. Lacks street map and East Prospect of the city engraving. Section from Payne's Register inserted between pp208 and 209. Stock a little toned, some offsetting but only occasional foxing. Interesting chapter on local industry and crafts including stocking manufacture, with engravings of looms, along with everything else that you might expect in such a history, historical, botanical, ecclesiastical, etc. 8vo. 370pp + plates.

Occasional scattered spotting, pp.225-241 foxed, 2 small tears to the margins of pp.101-102, some folding plates trimmed a little close. Contemporary brown calf, gilt spine with red morocco title label. Slight vertical crackling to spine but sound, joints repaired, a few stains and some wear around the edges, endpaper edges toned, still very good. Armorial bookplate of 'Finborough Library' to front pastedown. Posthumously-published work assembled by the botanist Charles Deering (1695?1749) from the materials collected by John Plumptre for a proposed history of Nottingham. ESTC T145699; Upcott 1057.

First and only edition, small 8vo (168 x 105 mm), [20], 231, [11], 6, [4], 24pp., some minor foxing, nineteenth-century half smooth blue calf, marbled boards, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, a nice copy. George Charles Deering [formerly Georg Karl Dering] (1695?1749), botanist, was born in Dresden and educated at the Hamburg Gymnasium and the University of Leiden (170810), where he was a pupil of Boerhaave. He returned to London in 1719 and then practised as a physician at Nottingham from 1735 till his death in 1749. He was also the editor of "Nottinghamia vetus et nova or an historical account of the ancient and present state of the town of Nottingham, 1751" which was published posthumously. One of the earliest of British local floras. "Although written at a time when botanical nomenclature was very different to what it is at present, the work must be acknowledged as a valuable record of the flora of the district. Its pages may be searched with interest to see the enormous changes which have taken place during the century and a half which have since elapsed. It may further be observed that it will always possess a more than local interest, because in it the two Nottingham meadow crocuses are for the first time introduced to the British flora."Brown, A History of Nottinghamshire.
