He recalls that his correspondent was responsible, at the Exposi…tion of 1806, for "toutes les operations concernant la classification des produits, et leur distribution . . .". He appoints him "Inspecteur de la prochaine Exposition, pour le classement de tous les objets qui y seront admise, et pour leur distribution et arrangement". He reveals his confidence. See Image.

Blattgröße ca. 50 x 33 cm - Bildgröße ca. 22 x 20 cm. *Élie, Herzog von Decazes (seit 1820) und von Glücksberg (Glücksbjerg, seit 1818), französischer Politiker, geb. 28. 9. 1780, gest. 25. 10. 1860; ging 1814 von der Seite Napoleons I. auf die der Bourbonen über und wurde 1815 Polizeiminister, 1818 Innenminis…ter und 1819 Ministerpräsident; nach der Ermordung des Thronerben (Herzog Charles Ferdinand von Berry), musste er zurücktreten. Decazes genoss das besondere Vertrauen König Ludwigs XVIII. Durch Heirat mit dem dänischen Königshaus verwandt, erhielt er von Friedrich VI. von Dänemark den Titel eines Herzogs von Glücksberg. Decazes förderte den Steinkohlenabbau im Département Aveyron und gründete 1828 die später nach ihm benannte Stadt Decazeville, wo er sich seit 1848 dem Aufbau der Hüttenwerke widmete. - Großes vollrandiges Bildnis, sauber und sehr gut erhalten. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this important document on penal reform from whence the famous statement, "the law must follow the convicted man into the prison where it has sent him", originated (later quoted by Foucault in Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison), published on 21 December 1819. Decazes (1780-1860) was the Minister Sec…retary of State at the Department of the Interior under Louis XVIII; his report discusses previous prison legislation with particular reference to diet and the separation of the sexes. WorldCat lists just five copies in institutional holdings worldwide, only one of which is located outside of France (Harvard). Quarto (240 x 196 mm). Contemporary blue coated paper wrappers. With glassine dust jacket. Title hand written in ink to spine. Spine and rear of glassine wrappers browned, paper wrappers a little marked with a few creases and small tears to spine, contents evenly browned with some spotting, overall a very good copy.

All to the members of the "conseil d'administration de la Société pour l'instruction élémentaire" (SIE, Society for Elementary Instruction). - The letter of 19 February discusses the establishment of new schools in the department Deux-Sèvres and a compensation payment for a teacher Maynard in Melle…: "La méthode d'enseignement mutuel commence à se répandre dans le département de ce deux Sèvres. Quatre école sont depuis longtems en acitvité, une cinquième vient de s'ouvrir; Mr. le préfet prend des mesures pour que ce nombre soit promptement augmenté [.]". - In the letter of 25 February, a school in Villefranche will finally be opened under the direction of M. Lafon, at the initiative of the prefect of Aveyron: "Je m'empresse de vous informer que les obstacles qui s'étaient d'abord opposés à l'établissement de l'École d'Enseignement mutuel de Villefranche [.]". - The letter of 28 May is about the development of schools in Aveyron (Villefranche, Millau, Rodez, Saint-Geniez); the future of Rodez's school is uncertain and requires special attention: "Rodez a récemment ouvert une école; son début a été heureux, mais son existence ne parait pas très assurée. Il est assez important pour que j'y veille avec une attention particulière [.]". - Created on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, the Society for Elementary Instruction was brought forth by philanthropists to introduce new English methods of elementary mutual teaching into France. - Each letter with printed letterhead "Ministère de l'Intérieur", notes in ink and pencil, the letter of 8 May with text marking in pencil, two letters with slight duststains in the margins, the letter of 25 February showing some duststains.
