4to. 20 pp. Including a population map of the Middle East and Northern Africa. Original printed wrappers. Stapled. First edition of this humanitarian report, arguing with confidence that "the Arab woman in professional work is at present better placed than her European counterpart". In this report, the Minority Rights Group, an international human rights organisation enjoying consultative status with the United Nations, assesses fundamental generational and social changes in living conditions for women across the Arab world, for example regarding education in the United Arab Emirates: "While previously only a few girls learnt to read and recite the Koran, most girls now go at least through primary education, even in remote desert and mountain areas. Because the first girls' school opened (in Sharjah) only in the 1950s, there are still very few females who have completed secondary education or a professional training. At present there are local girl students at Arab and European Universities". - Apart from the Emirates, the report addresses living conditions for women in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, the Yemen Arab Republic, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Oman, Libya, Morocco, Jordan, and Palestine. - Revised editions were published in 1976 and 1983. - Very well preserved. - OCLC 2142864.
