Une édition des Mémoires de Villars par l'abbé de Montgon fut publiée en 1739, mais elle est très incomplète, ne reposant que sur la copie d'un seul manuscrit et sur des relevés de gazettes. Le Maréchal de Castries et le Marquis de Vogué firent appel à Anquetil pour restituer des mémoires authentiques et fiables et rendre justice à l'un des plus grand généraux de Louis XIV ; ils lui prêtèrent à cette fin 142 cahiers de mémoires de 32p. in-folio, et 14 volumes de lettres. Anquetil s'attela donc à un vaste travail de compilation et fit parler le Duc à la première personne, en s'aidant des lettres.
