This is a travel book written by the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660) which was republished in 1854 (this volume). In it, he narrates his voyage of 35 years from Rome to China and back and his missionary work. First Edition of the first separately published description of the whole of Vietnam, containing what appears to be the earliest detailed map of North Vietnam. It is preceded by Cristóforo Borri's Relatione della nuova missione.della Cocincina (1631), which dealt only with South Vietnam. In addition to presenting a first-hand account of missionary activity in the country from 1627 to 1646, Rhodes gives details respecting the manners and customs of the native inhabitants, politics and government, natural resources and commerce, &c. French and Latin translations were published in 1652. Rhodes, a French Jesuit, was assigned to the missions of the East Indies and spent several years in Goa, Malacca, Batavia, and Macao, before proceeding to Cochin China (South Vietnam) in 1624, where fellow Jesuits had been working since 1615. He arrived with five colleagues under the leadership of Gabriel De Matos. Within six months he had learnt Cochinchinois, invented the quoc-ngu, by which Vietnamese could be represented by Roman characters, and evangelized much of the region between the coast and the Annamese highlands. (Howgego) In 1627 he proceeded to Tongking (North Vietnam), where he met with equal success, reputedly personally converting over 6000 souls, until he was expelled in 1630. He spent the next ten years in Macao making occasional excursions into Canton. Allowed to return to South Vietnam in 1640, he was later arrested and imprisoned and again expelled, returning to Rome via Persia in 1646. As this Relation was written in the period following the Sakoku Edict, it necessarily limits itself for the most part to recent events in Indochina, and it contains much detailed information on Cochinchina and Tonkin. It was authored by the French Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes(1593-1660), who worked for many years as a missionary in Indochina. He compiled the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum, the first trilingualVietnamese-Portuguese-Latindictionary, which was published in Rome in 1651. The present example, though defective in other respects, has a frontispiece engraving not present in other copies (cf. the online digitised copies in the BnF and the University of Waterloo, Ontario). A presentation copy of the first edition of an important early work on Vietnam published in Rome in 1650 containing the FIRST PRINTED MAP of the region. Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660) was a Jesuit priest born in Avignon, France, who devoted most of his life to missionary work in Vietnam. Originally sent to Japan, he arrived in Macau in 1623. He was then sent to Vietnam where he remained until banished in 1645. He wrote the first Vietnamese catechism and had a major influence on Vietnamese writing. He was a gifted linguist who mastered Vietnamese in only six months. He went on to compile the first Portuguese-Latin-Vietnamese dictionary. He was also one of the first to attempt to Romanize the Vietnamese alphabet, in other words to write it using western characters. The present-day national language of Vietnam, Quoc Ngu, is based on his original phonetic and transliteration work. As a missionary Rhodes was constantly battling with the local pagan priests, was exiled twice and nearly sentenced to death for his teachings. Rhodes claimed in his reports that he converted more than 6,000 Vietnamese. He also worked as a missionary in China, Macao and Persia, but his true love was for the Vietnamese people. The first part of the work is a description of Tonkin and its customs, the second part discusses his missionary activities in the region. The engraved map is the earliest to show Vietnam in detail and is centred on the Gulf of Tongkin and Hainan. It extends to Macao in the east, the borders of Laos and Quang Ngai in the south.
