Rob de Lange was lange tijd docent-onderzoeker aan de Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. Daarna was hij docent sociale wetenschappen en onderzoeksmethoden aan de Hogeschool Utrecht, in het bijzonder bij de Faculteiten Communicatie & Journalistiek en Educatie. Daarnaast was hij universitair docent bij de Afdeling Communicatiewetenschap en de International School for Humanities and Social Sciences aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Naast onderwijs in methoden van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek verzorgde hij daar seminars over public affairs aan bachelor- en masterstudenten. Hij is gepromoveerd op een proefschrift over public affairs.
