Paris, Beaurain, 1782. 2 volumes in-folio, viii, 212 p., 24 pl., veau fauve marbré, dos à nerfs ornés, encadrement à triples filets et écoinçons dorés sur les plats. Officier d'état-major et historien militaire, le comte Philippe-Henri de Grimoard (1753-1815) est l'un des grands théoriciens de la guerre à la fin de l'Ancien Régime, proche conseiller des ministres de la guerre sous Louis XVI et auteur d'études tactiques et d'histoires de campagnes destinées à la formation des officiers. Il s'associe ici au chevalier Jean de Beaurain (1696-1771), géographe ordinaire du roi Louis XV, spécialiste de cartographie militaire, connu pour ses atlas de campagnes et ses atlas « de choix » pour amateurs éclairés. L'ouvrage participe au renouveau de l'historiographie militaire des années 1780, qui, à la veille de la Révolution française, relit les grandes figures de l'armée royale, au premier rang desquelles le maréchal de Turenne (1611-1675), pour en dégager des modèles de commandement et de stratégie. Le texte de Grimoard, d'abord publié sous son nom, fut en grande partie mutilé par la censure, au point que l'auteur retira sa signature et laissa Beaurain apparaître seul comme auteur, bien qu'il n'ait gravé que les cartes et plans. L'ouvrage est illustré de 24 grandes cartes repliées et plans topographiques des opérations : sièges, marches, contre-marches, batailles de la guerre de Hollande et manoeuvres de 1674-1675 y sont expliqués opération par opération, dans un va-et-vient constant entre récit et documents. Ces cartes et plans, gravés avec un grand luxe de détail, montrent places fortes, lignes de bataille, routes, cours d'eau et positions successives des armées. Plusieurs plans de batailles emploient des papiers coloriés superposés pour figurer les mouvements de troupes, procédé précoce et novateur dans l'édition cartographique. Provenance : Louis Antoine comte Pille (1749-1828), attestée par son ex-libris typographique au revers du plat du premier volume et son ex-libris manuscrit daté 1792 et 1793 au revers du plat du second volume et sur la page de titre. Officier général de la Révolution et de l'Empire, descendant de Jean Racine (1639-1699), Pille entre en 1789 comme lieutenant de volontaires chasseurs à cheval dans la garde nationale de Dijon, devient lieutenant-colonel du 1er bataillon de volontaires de la Côte-d'Or en 1791 et se distingue notamment à Jemappes, Anderlecht, Tirlemont et Neerwinden avant d'être promu général de brigade en 1793 puis général de division en 1795. Spécialiste des questions d'organisation, il termine sa carrière comme inspecteur général de l'infanterie, est fait chevalier de l'Empire, chevalier de Saint-Louis et commandeur de la Légion d'honneur, et son nom « PILLE » est gravé sur l'Arc de Triomphe. Provenance: Louis Antoine Count Pille (1749-1828), Revolutionary and Empire general officer and descendant of Jean Racine (1639-1699), attested by his typographic ex-libris. Bindings rubbed, joints split, corners blunted, headcaps worn, and marginal worming affecting the engraved portion of four maps, a loose map, and other minor defects.
