The book seeks to understand the ma…nner in which Punjabis constructed the image of Bhagat Singh in their literature. Bhagat Sigh's revolutionary life culminating in his martyrdom had an impact on the Punjabis who in their diverse genres of folklore catch-songs, marriage songs, couplets and proverbs eulogized him in multiple contexts. Traditional balladeers narrated the heroics of Bhagat Singh in their popular recitals to the rural audiences. Therefore, it is not surprising that Bhagat Singh caught the imagination of contemporary poets who had begun to perceive him as a martyr even before his execution. Bhagat Singh facilitates an 'interaction' among the Punjabis despite the boundaries fabricated by colonial politics. An exploration into the symbiosis of Punjabi culture and Bhagat Singh is meaningful because this exercise underscores the syncretic cultural way in which the Hindu, Muslim and Sikh Punjabis recognize each other and maintain their common cultural space. Bhagat Singh continues to be a symbol of revolution and martyrdom.

The kin…d of social history of medieval Punjab which has been attempted in this book does not subscribe to a narrow communitarian employment of the people of the region. The author has endeavoured to construct a fresh profile of the Punjabis from their own socio cultural point of view. The book involves investigations of the lived experiences and representations of everyday life of the people of medieval Punjab who in the colonial and post colonial historiography are presented as Muslim Sikh and Hindu Punjabis. Gaur has assigned them a prefix Punjabi and hence has presented the social and cultural profile of the Punjabi Muslims instead of reading them as Muslim Punjabis. The book reveals the evolution of socio cultural fusion in the land of five rivers which a student of history discovers by employing folklore/people's literature as source material. Thus the selection of Hir Waris as an unconventional source of history writing is a methodological departure particularly when intervention of political ideologies in the craft of writing social history has been active since long and when the semantic of culture has shifted from diversities to differences. The present study does not simply reproduce the medieval Punjabi society as reflected in Hir Waris rather it seeks to unfold the folk legend of Hir Ranjha in the wider political social cultural and religious contexts of medieval Punjab. The volume suggests that a society its folklore and history are organically linked with one another. 266 pp.

In due course Sufism imbibed vernacularity of the region to such an extent that it permeated every aspect of the Punjabi lived experience. Unfortunately Sufism remained marginalized in the historiography of Punjab owing to the communitarian consciousness of the colonial period the partition of the province in 1947 and the subsequent communal politics. The present volume seeks to fill a major gap in the historical studies on Punjab. A collective endeavour of scholars from India and Pakistan this anthology of 18 essays is organized in three sections that are devoted to Sufi mystics Sufi literature and Sufi shrines. In a detailed introduction the editors present a critique of the divergent approaches to Sufi studies from the early twentieth century to the present. The essays explore the methods adopted by the Punjab Sufis to popularize the mystic ideology and praxis in the medieval socio cultural milieu. These writings also delve into the different genres of Sufi literature both in the elite and vernacular languages with a view to appreciate the nuances of Punjab Sufism. Apart from the architectural features of the Sufi shrines attempts have been made to illumine the organic linkages between these institutions and the Punjabis and thus to underscore the Sufic non communitarian devotion as a major ingredient of the Punjabi cultural fusion.
