He makes a strong defense of modern medicine, preventive care, hygiene and public health as core of a viable strategy for accessible medicine. Particularly striking are the linkages he makes between poverty and health, and between the state of public health in Britain and colonial India in the corresponding years, themes ignored by most scholars. Less concerned with the effect of modern medicine on "indigenous" medicine, he argues for criteria that center on the health of Indian people. Unlike most researchers and scholars of the subject, the author is well-versed in theory and practice of medicine and in medical history, which lends his book an originality and wider perspective. The book both provokes and educates. Written in a lucid and accessible language, and with a clear historical approach, the book would be of as much interest to lay persons as to historians and those in the medical profession.

This handbook is based on the accounts of the excavations published in the annual reports of Archaeological Survey of India. In ancient Buddhists texts these remains are called by the name of Rishipatna or Mrigadava. This book is exceptionally good in the context of Buddhist literature. About the author:-Rai Bahadur Daya Ram Sahni CIE (1879 1939) was an Indian archaeologist who supervised the excavation of the Indus valley site at Harappa in 1921 and 1922. A protege of John Marshall, in 1931, Sahni became the first Indian to be appointed Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a position in which he served till 1935. In 1903, Sahni was posted to the Punjab and United Provinces circle where he worked under J. Ph. Vogel. He was involved in the excavation of Kasia in 1905 and Rajgir in Bihar under John Marshall in JanuaryFebruary 1906. In September 1907, Sahni assisted Marshall in the excavation of a stupa at Rampurva in Champaran district. Marshall, Director-General of Archaeology in India, who during two seasons personally conducted the excavations on this important Buddhist site. The plans were prepared by James Ransome, la…te Consulting Architect to the Government of India. As at the end of the cold season of 1908-09, when the building was nearly completed, Dr Marshall proceeded home on long leave, it fell to the author task to take measures for the proper arrangement of the sculptures in the new quarters. The work of arranging and labelling was done in the cold season following under the personal supervision of Lala Daya Ram Sahni, who had taken an active part in Dr. Marshall's explorations, and was, therefore, well qualified for the task. At the same time he prepared a catalogue of the exhibits which is now offered to the public. The labels on the objects themselves are of necessity very brief, and it has, therefore, been their aim in the present catalogue to embody all information which may be of interest both to the dilettante and to the expert. The order followed in listing the exhibits are chiefly chronological. It contains 29 fine plates to delineate this subject properly.
