[3] pp. Bifolium. 5 x 8 inches. June 25th, 1885. Clarence Dawson letter describing the advantages of self-binding wheat machine in use by farmers including his uncle. "They have a 'self-binding' machine that is one that cuts and binds the wheat all at once and so saves the farmer a good deal of money, for before he had to pay all the men who followed the old reapers to bind the wheat. It is a very great improvement. I like to see it work. It is a pretty big machine and takes three mules to draw it easily. It goes along gathering wheat, then all of a sudden you hear a 'clank-clank' and out drops a bundle of wheat neatly bound with a piece of cord-knot tied and all. But machining time is lively. Then there about twenty men come here with the machine that comes to the thresh with wheat. It generally takes about two days, threshing about a thousand bushels a day." The self binding harvesting machine was put into use in Maryland about 1880. Very good, closed tears along folds, minor soiling, contents clean.
