Compiled around 1433 and first published around 1483-1485, Provinciale is the main authority for early English canon law. Divided into five books, it is a digest of the synodal constitutions of the province of Canterbury, from the period of Archbishop Stephen Langton [c.1155-1228] to that of Archbishop Henry Chichele [1414-1443], with Lyndwood's gloss and Acton's commentaries. It is considered the law of the Church of England by many authorities. The notes in this 1664 edition are abridged by Sharrock. A notable English churchman, he is best known for his contributions to botany, association with Robert Boyle and philosophical disputes with Thomas Hobbes. Our copy is desirable because it has the copperplate frontispiece, which was not included in all copies. English Short-Title Catalogue R216655.
