Leatherbound. Zustand: Like New. Limited Edition. Limited Edition, Pulitzer Prized Series, LIKE NEW! Bound in full genuine leather with raised hubs, elaborate 22?karat gilt tooling, all edges gilt, and moire silk endpapers with a sewn?in ribbon marker, this volume exemplifies Franklin Library?s highest?grade 1970s binding. The text is sewn (not glued) on high?quality, opaque paper, produced for both durability and an elegant shelf presentation. Won Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1936. 416 pages, 2 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; 24 cm. . . . . . . . Set in Oregon in the early years of the twentieth century, H. L. Davis?s Honey in the Horn chronicles the struggles faced by homesteaders as they attempted to settle down and eke out subsistence from a still-wild land. With sly humor and keenly observed detail, Davis pays homage to the indomitable character of Oregon?s restless people and dramatic landscapes without romanticizing or burnishing the myths. Clay Calvert, an orphan, works as a hand on a sheep ranch until he stumbles into trouble and is forced to flee. Journeying throughout the state, from the lush coastal forests, to the Columbia Gorge, to the golden wheat fields east of the Cascades, he encounters a cast of characters as rich and diverse as the land, including a native Tunne boy and a beautiful girl named Luce. An essential book for all serious readers of Northwest literature, this classic coming-of-age novel has been called the ?Huckleberry Finn of the West.? It is the only Oregon book that has ever won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

The AIP is made up of various member societies. Its corporate headquarters are at the American Center for Physics in College Park, Maryland, but the institute also has an office in Melville, New York and Beijing, China. The focus of the AIP appears to be organized around a set of core activities. The first delineated activity is to support member societies regarding essential society functions. This is accomplished by annually convening the various society officers to discuss common areas of concern. A range of topics is discussed which includes scientific publishing, public policy issues, membership-base issues, philanthropic giving, science education, science careers for a diverse population, and a forum for sharing ideas. Another core activity is publishing the science of physics in research journals, magazines, and conference proceedings. Other core activities are tracking employment and education trends with six decades of coverage, being a liaison between research science and industry, historical collections and outreach programs, and supporting science education initiatives and supporting undergraduate physics. One other core activity is as an advocate for science policy to the U.S. Congress and the general public. The AIP was founded in 1931 as a response to lack of funding for the sciences during the Great Depression. It formally incorporated in 1932 consisting of five, original, "member-societies", and a total of 4 thousand members. A new set of "member-societies" was added beginning in the mid-1960s. As soon as the AIP was established it began publishing scientific journals." Also from Wikipedia: "Physics Today is the membership magazine of the American Institute of Physics that was established in 1948. It is provided to the members of twelve physics societies, including the American Physical Society. Although its content is scientifically rigorous and up to date, it is not a true scholarly journal in the sense of being a primary vehicle for communicating new results. Rather, it is more of a hybrid magazine that informs readers about important developments in the form of overview articles written by experts, shorter review articles written internally by staff, and also discusses the latest issues and events of importance to the science community such as science politics. The physics community's main vessel for new results are the Physical Review suite of scientific journals published by the American Physical Society and Applied Physics Letters published by the American Institute of Physics. The magazine provides a historical resource of events associated with physics, including debunking the physics behind the so-called Star Wars program of the 1980s, and the state of physics in China and the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1970s. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2011 impact factor of 5.648." Presumed first edition/first printing of this issue.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. 272 pp. ; profusely illustrated with artwork, drawings, and photographs ; red decorative cloth, no dustjacket ; ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PSYCHIC OCCURENCES is preserved in this yearbook. A member of the graduating January class of 1933, GENEVA ABBOTT PATTERSON, (1916-2011) was asked at age 16 to imagine the city of St. Louis in the future, and she amazingly created a watercolor depicting the St. Louis cityscape and INCLUDED THE ST. LOUIS GATEWAY ARCH 15 YEARS BEFORE IT BECAME A CONCEPT IN THE MIND OF ITS DESIGNER, EERO SAARINEN IN 1947! The Gateway Arch was not completed until 1963. ; She added the following prophetic text spoken by Ulysses's wife Penelope from line 24 of Tennyson's Ulysses (1842): "Yet all experience is an Arch wherethro' gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades for ever, and for ever when I move" ; Geneva Abbott furthered her art studies at the Hadley Vocational School and became a member of the St. Louis Artists Guild. She worked as a commercial artist for International Shoe Company, and then turned to work as a watercolorist in St. Louis, Hilton Head, South Carolina and Vero Beach, Florida; the previous owner of the yearbook has added commentary and newspaper clippings of happenings to many of the senior class, some documenting the deaths of several in World War II, or by violence in St. Louis. Marriages of many of the women are recorded. Updated addresses and phone numbers of many former students are also added ; The yearbook has numerous articles written by students and show photographs and drawings in illustration. Subjects feature historical information about St. Louis, lists of artists, musicians with details of their lives and work are included ; all the artwork by the students reflects the then current Art Deco trends ; a very rare and historically important volume; and an exceedingly difficult-to-locate Saarinen collectible ; FINE.
