The Cucurbitaceae are among the most important plant families that supply man with edible products and useful fibres. The cultivate species of this family are not nearly as significant in man's economy as the cereals or the legumes but in the tropics subtropics and milder portions of the temperate zones of both hemispheres they are crops of more than ordinary importance. For the people of these areas the cultivated Cucurbitaceae have a place in their diet as sources of carbohydrates when cooked (squash pumpkin marrow chayota) as dessert or breakfast fruits (water melon musk melon) as ingredients of salads (cucumber gherkin) or as pickles (cucumber gherkin). There are other minor uses for example the fruits of lagenaria siceraria (White flowered gourd) before the advent of pottery were indispensable to primitive people around the household the rinds of some mature fruits were used for baskets jugs pots and cutlery and the fibrous material of Luffa (dish rag gourd) was used for scouring. This last material has also been used in certain oil filters and for insulation packing and other purposes of this nature. The Cucurbitaceae consist of about ninety genera and 750 species almost equally divided between the New and Old World Tropics. 249 pp.

This report is a very early "preliminary" product of the monumental USGS-Aramco mapping project (1956-63), which, among other things, produced 21 Geological maps covering the whole of Saudi Arabia in a series of Quadrangles numbered I-200A to I-220A. It was prepared under the follow-up Saudi Arabian Mineral Exploration Project launched in 1963, which Brown coordinated from Jeddah. This report was a joint effort, with Akhrass representing the Directorate General for Mineral Resources. The area, named after the Red Sea port of Al Qunfidhah, the largest settlement within it, lies within the Tihamat Ash-Sham Quadrangle (covered by Map I-216A). Field operations were conducted simultaneously during 9-16 April 1967 with geologic mapping by helicopter from a camp near Al Khamis, about 31km to the west. Work was cut short due to poor weather and flying conditions. The folded sheets include 2 location maps, and electromagnetic horizontal coil profiles. Very rare. Brown's covering letter states 20 copies were sent to Kabbani. Additional copies would have been circulated within USGS and probably Aramco. Worldcat locates two at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, and Colorado School of Mines (OCLC 182585261). USGS reissued it in 1969 as Open-File Report 69-68 (USGS website).
