Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice. No compromise in the defense of Mother Earth!" (Dave Foreman, Editor). Engraved title-pages to each volume of the first series; 58 portraits; nine folding maps; 12 plates and one folding plan.An unusually long run (and almost complete, save for the final two volumes) of this interesting and important monthly periodical published for British military officers. It contains military histories, news on current campaigns (particularly the conflicts with Napoleon l's France on the Iberian Peninsula), biographies of prominent officers, lists of promotions, essays on the art of war, correspondence and, oddly in volume seven is Voyage Down the Rhine From Mentz to Holland by "the Late Mrs. Radcliffe, Authoress of The Mysteries of Udolpho, etc." When this was issued Ann Radcliffe was to live for another ten years. There are other, but less interesting, anomalies, such as a printing of Voltaire's Life of Peter the Great, etc. .Ownership signature in volumes one through four and nine of Sir Charles Chichester (1795-1847) who "was reputed one of the best regimental commanding officers in the British army" - DNB. The letter begins: 'My dear Percy | Your catalogues especially the literary parts of them are my favourite reading. You find such unusual books, and describe them with such care and skill.' He asks him to send him, 'to Soho Square', the two Rothenstein items nos 260 and 260 a'. He explains that while he longs 'for some of the Blunts', his daughter is getting married that June, and he is 'saving up for that'.
