In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. WHEN FREEDOM FOUND ITS VOICE. Born into slavery in Virginia, Daniel Webster Davis became an educator, lecturer, and poet whose writing preserved the language, traditions, and everyday experiences of Black Southern communities. Published in 1897, Weh Down Souf captures the humor, faith, hardships, and customs of African-American life in the decades following emancipation. Unlike many contemporary writers of dialect verse, Davis drew upon the culture he knew firsthand, bringing a distinctive perspective to a literary form frequently shaped by outsiders. This first edition is equally appealing for its artistic production: Elizabeth Geary's striking Arts and Crafts binding, illustrations by William L. Sheppard, and an important appendix by African-American intellectual and diplomat John H. Smyth. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: AN ARTS AND CRAFTS BINDING BY ELIZABETH GEARY. +++ Original olive-green pictorial cloth over beveled boards, with Elizabeth Geary's design of stylized orange trees beneath a radiant rising sun, incorporating orange, green, and black decoration. Spine lettered in black. +++ Top edge gilt; fore and lower edges untrimmed and deckled. Printed on laid paper, with full-page illustrations by William L. Sheppard on coated stock. +++ (16mo), 7 inches tall. vi, [1], 7-136 pages, followed by glossary and appendix. +++ Includes an appendix by John H. Smyth, African-American journalist, educator, and diplomat. CONDITION: VERY GOOD - EXCEPTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE PICTORIAL CLOTH. Binding tight and square, with moderate shelf handling wear. Decorative cloth remains bright, with little rubbing or fading; spine lettering sharp and legible. Top edge gilt retains its finish. Interior clean, with light, even toning and occasional minor foxing. Several leaves retain unopened edges. A particularly well-preserved example. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: AN EARLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN LITERARY VOICE. Davis belonged to the first generation of Black American writers whose lives bridged slavery and freedom. Educated after emancipation, he became a teacher, principal, lecturer, and advocate for African-American education and cultural expression. His poems document Southern Black vernacular, religious traditions, folklore, and community life at a time when African-American writers were increasingly asserting their own literary identities. JOHN H. SMYTH AND BLACK INTELLECTUAL HISTORY. The appendix by John H. Smyth, a prominent African-American journalist, educator, and former United States Minister to Liberia, adds historical significance by placing Davis's work within the broader development of Black American literature and intellectual life. A DISTINCTIVE AMERICAN DECORATIVE BINDING. Elizabeth Geary's pictorial cloth design and William L. Sheppard's illustrations give the volume additional appeal as a product of late nineteenth-century American bookmaking. Its combination of literary history and decorative design makes it especially attractive to collectors of African Americana, Southern literature, and Arts and Crafts bindings.
