In den WarenkorbJacket is very good. First edition. Romantic, idyllic, humorous, even satirical, sometimes naive, almost always graceful, these songs from the time of the last great pharaohs of Egypt preserve a picture of daily life of the New Kingdom, the last great flourishing of ancient Egyptian civilization. These ancient verses sing as poe…try to the modern ear, and the translations are faithful to the spirit and idiom of the originals. Wearing the mantle of scholarship lightly, the poems re-create pe0ple of flesh and blood out of the distant past. A few foxed spots along top edge of text block. Previous owner's bookplate of free front endpaper, which might have been the cause of a slight rippling of the page. Otherwise, tight, clean and very good. Small 4to. 9-11/16" x 7-1/8". Blind stamped grey cloth covered boards. Silver stamped spine. 120 pp. Illustrated with hieroglyphs drawn by the translator and with paintings from Egyptian tombs by Nina M. Davies (illustrator).

Adam Olearius (c.1599-1671) was a German scholar, mathematician, geographer and librarian. He became secretary to the ambassador sent by Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, to the Shah of Safavid (Iran), and published two books about the events and observations during his travels. He later became court official to Frederick III who was planning to establish economic ties between northern Germany and Russia. As a result, in 1633 he was appointed secretary to the ambassadors Philipp Crusius, jurisconsult, and Otto Bruggemann, a merchant from Hamburg, sent by the duke to Muscovy and Persia in the hope of making arrangements by which his newly founded city of Friedrichstadt should become the terminus of an overland silk-trade.His second Persian journey was again led by Brüggemann and Crusius, with Olearius once more as secretary. They were accompanied by, among others, the traveller Johan Albrecht de Mandelslo and the poet and physician Paul Fleming. The delegation left Altona on 22 October 1635, embarked at Travemünde, reached Moscow on 29 March 1636, and continued on 30 June via Balakhna near Nizhniy Novgorod, to Volga in a boat specially built for this purpose by the Lübeck skippers who had been brought along. On 10 October, they attempted to cross the Caspian Sea in a self-built vessel at Astrakhan but were shipwrecked in Niyazabad (near modern Xaçmaz and Derbent) on 14 November 1636. The land journey resumed on 22 December. They reached Shamakhi, the capital of Shirvan province, on 30 December and remained there until 27 March 1637. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of an early work from the cradle of printing in the Pacific Islands, comprising a selection of the Pauline epistles translated into the Tahitian language for the very first time. The work includes Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. As other works printed in T…ahiti at this time, it is exceedingly rare. The present work was translated by the Welsh Methodist schoolmaster and missionary John Davies (1772-1855), who served as a missionary and teacher for the London Missionary Society (LMS) in Tahiti from 1800 until his death in 1855. He became superintendent of a school at Papara established by the LMS, and was involved in the planning of mission schools in Fiji. As a gifted linguist, Davies was also the author of the first work ever published in Tahitian, a spelling book in that language, which was printed in London in 1810.He published numerous other works on or in the Tahitian language, including a dictionary and grammar, and translations from the New Testament and Psalms, Brown's Catechism, the Westminster Catechism, and the Pilgrim's Progress, as well as several minor works. A second edition of the present work was published in 1825.With the bookplate of the Library of the Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Ohio mounted on the front pastedown, and a bookbinder's stamp on the inside of the chemise. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the boards are somewhat rubbed, with some loss of material at the spine ends. A tiny wormhole at the top edge of the title page, occasional very light foxing. Otherwise in good condition.l Darlow & Moule, 9072; Harding, The Tahitian imprints of the London Missionary Society, 1810-1834, no. 37; O'Reilly & Reitman 5851; WorldCat 1157012789, 249714621, 952322876, 1556664 (16 copies). Contemporary diced brown Russia, with a red morocco title label on the spine, lettered in gold, marbled end papers, marbled edges. The work is kept in a green cloth chemise, which is housed in a quarter green morocco slipcase, with green cloth sides, and the title lettered in gold on the spine. The text is printed in Tahitian, in two columns. Pages: 71, [1 blank] pp.

The principal aim of the DukeofHolstein's embassies was to establish an overlandtrade route with Persia. A first embassy travelled to Russia in 1633-34 to secure a rightofpassage throughtheTsar's realms; the embassy to Persia itself was sent in 1635. Adam Olearius acted as secretary on both embassies, and his accounts of Tartary and Persia, first published in Dutch in 1647, were of the utmost value to European travellers of the later seventeenth century. This is the second 'corrected' English edition, translated by JohnDavies (the first English edition had appeared in 1662). Thesecond part, with separate title, comprises the narrative of German adventurer Johann Albrecht von Mandelslo, who was also a member of the Holstein embassy. He was given permission to journey on to India, also visiting Ceylon before returning to Europe via the Cape. Although he did not personally travel to the Far East, Mandelslo's account includes secondhand descriptions of Formosa and China. Wing 0-270;Löwendahl, China illustrata nova. Supplement, 1571.
