First edition. 218pp. Elspeth Mary Davie (1918-1995) was a Scottish novelist, short story writer, painter, and art teacher. The eighteen stories in this volume reflect a wide range of mood, from the chilly atmosphere of 'Family House', where five ageing brothers and sisters find their lives brought to a standstill by the accumulated possessions of generations of their ancestors to the wry impudence of the pupil in 'Sunday Class' who becomes incensed by the teacher's nagging questions about 'things God wants us to be grateful for', and gives a startling answer. The book is bound in the original green boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in excellent condition. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper (design by 'Tandem') is in very good condition. The spine is slightly faded and the spine ends show light wear.
