Near fine condition, just a couple of tiny marks/nicks to boards and very minor staining to a couple of page edges, very good for age.

Dark blue cloth, blind stamped cover illustration, gilt-stamped blue spine label, dust-jacket; jacket worn. Burndy bookplate. Very good. Through a friendship that he developed with the wealthy American sportsman, former wartime naval officer, and book collector, Henry C. Taylor, Waters began his studies of the history of navigation. He published "The Rutters of the Sea" in 1967 and the "Art of Navigation in England and Elizabethan and Early Stuart Times" in 1958, books that Taylor had instigated as well as financially supported. In 1960, Waters became head of Navigation and Astronomy at the National Maritime Museum. There, he played an important role in converting the Old Royal Observatory, Greenwich into a museum in 1967. He served as secretary of the National Maritime Museum from 1968 to 1971 and then became deputy director from 1971 to 1978. Retiring from the civil Service in 1978 at the age of 67, he held two visiting professorships, a Caird Fellowship at the National Maritime Museum, and a fellowship at the John Carter Brown Library. This work was reproduced in facsimile from the original edition held in the private library of Henry C. Taylor. With a fascinating introduction, notes, and a bibliography of English Military books by David W. Waters. Collated, complete with a portrait frontispiece of Drake, a facsimile reprint of Greepe's ballad, and five folding charts and plans. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally lovely, with only minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Mark and slight creasing to upper extremity of frontispiece plate, not affecting image. Near Fine. book.
